Vlastislav – Skalka Castle, Exhibitions and Views

Vlastislav combines landscapes, castle history and unusual exhibitions within a compact thematic area. The village lies on the Modla stream; above Vlastislav, the tower of Skalka Castle rises on a small basalt outcrop. This creates a destination where historical discoveries, a viewpoint and a documented tourist route can be combined.

Zámek Skalka: History, Fairy Tales and Special Collections

The accessible first and second floors of Zámek Skalka house permanent exhibitions on the history of Vlastislav, beekeeping, historic prams, aircraft models and fairy tales. The exhibition themes therefore range from local history and beekeeping to historic prams, aircraft models and a fairy-tale exhibition.

Zámek Skalka can be visited via a separate entrance at the round tower on the rock above the château; the first and second floors are accessible. This specific access arrangement is relevant when planning your visit and helps you assess the exhibition tour realistically.

Castle History and Archaeological Traces

The Gothic Skalka Castle dates from the 14th century and was badly damaged during the Thirty Years' War. The surviving keep is the only preserved part of Skalka Castle and is protected as a cultural monument. Alongside the exhibitions, a single surviving architectural element is therefore also central, revealing the site's eventful history.

Older traces reach back even further: the Vlastislav hillfort was already settled in the second half of the 9th century; the fortified area was established in the following century. At the hillfort, the greatest concentration of dwellings and other finds was in the outer bailey area, not on the acropolis. Near Vlastislav – Na Šancích there is also a promontory site with remains of an early medieval hillfort complex from the 9th century.

Views and Tourist Route

From the viewpoint below the Skalka tower, you can see Košťálov, Oltářík, the surrounding hills of the Central Bohemian Uplands and Milešovka. The view adds a clear landscape experience to the cultural and historical focus. The international tourist route Zlatá stezka zemí hradů runs along the road between Vlastislav and Sutom; from there, a branch leads towards the château and the ruins of Skalka Castle. If you like to structure your days around specific destinations, this route provides clear and comprehensible guidance.

Events and Getting There

Summer festivals were held in the courtyard of the municipal office on 30 August 2025 and 15 August 2026. Events involving the burning of the witches took place in the courtyard of Zámek Skalka in Vlastislav on 30 April 2024 and 30 April 2025. These dated examples show that, alongside the historic sites, local events are also part of Vlastislav's character.
