Sedlec: Hiking between Házmburk and the České středohoří

Sedlec combines local history with a landscape shaped by volcanic hills. The village lies in a hollow at the northern foot of Házmburk Castle. The 230 m-high Malý Planík rises in the nearby area; from there, you can enjoy a view of the České středohoří. Sedlec is therefore particularly suited to visitors who want to combine hiking, marked trails and historical discoveries.

The first surviving written mention of Sedlec dates from 1237. In the second half of the 14th century, the village came into the possession of the Zajíc of Valdek family. Another visible testimony to the village’s history is the memorial to those who fell in the First World War, erected in 1928 next to the Chapel of the Guardian Angel. The chapel was renovated and reconsecrated in the 1990s.

Hiking trails through Sedlec and to Házmburk Castle

A hiking trail from Košťálov Castle via the Lucký Mill to Házmburk Castle and Libochovice Chateau runs through the centre of Sedlec. In the vicinity of Sedlec, you can visit the old Lucký Mill along the Třebenice–Libochovice route. This route continues through Sedlec to Házmburk Castle, is marked red throughout and is 12 km long.

A longer option is the Ústí nad Labem–Házmburk–Libochovice hiking route. It passes through Sedlec and is 47 km long. With the exception of the Bílka–Milešov section, it is also suitable for mountain bikes and trekking bikes. For day planning, the different route lengths provide clear guidance: the 12 km Třebenice–Libochovice route and the 47 km connection follow different scales, while both link Sedlec with the area around Házmburk.

Cycling routes and practical orientation

There is also a specific connection through the village for cyclists. The Lovosice–Házmburk–Lovosice cycling route passes through Sedlec and is approximately 50 km long. Those who want to explore the area on marked trails thus have a second means of transport alongside the hiking connections. In the vicinity of Sedlec, Házmburk Castle can also be reached from Libochovice město railway station via an approximately 3.5 km-long, red-marked path through the fields.

For local orientation, Sedlec has an inn. Together with the historic chapel, the memorial and the routes through the village, this creates a destination where the landscape and history fit directly into your excursion planning.
