Hradec Králové District: Forests, Culture and Special Excursions

Hradec Králové District combines extensive forest landscapes with unusual cultural destinations and historic castle settings.

Forest Trails in Different Formats

The municipal forests of Hradec Králové cover 3,771 hectares. Scots pine accounts for 67 percent of the forest. This gives the area a clearly distinctive landscape character that can be experienced in several very different ways. The blue wheelchair trail begins at the terminus of bus 9 near Lesní hřbitov. The Vodnická stezka is an easy route of approximately 2 kilometres. If you would like to combine a shorter route with a fixed theme, the Stezka siluet passes nine silhouette boards along approximately half a kilometre.

The educational trails also have their own character. The Funkce lesa educational trail runs through the Černá stráň natural monument. The Les Chlum educational trail includes ten information boards and ten stations and introduces rare and protected plant species. This allows you to choose between a short thematic route, a longer forest-oriented walk and a trail with a particular focus on plant life, without all the excursions having the same character.

Castle Park and Historic Atmosphere

Hrádek u Nechanic combines architecture with an extensive park landscape. The park covers approximately 18 hectares and contains broad meadows, mature groups of trees and scattered woodland. It was established in 1844. A circular path offers views of the château, which stands on a gentle rise. This makes it possible to combine a visit to the château with an independent walk through the park and changing landscape views.

Hrádek u Nechanic château is designed in the Tudor Gothic style. It was built between 1839 and 1857 as a representative summer residence for the Harrach family. The exhibition conveys aristocratic life in the second half of the 19th century and uses original historical furnishings. For your travel planning, this creates a clear distinction between time spent in the park and the cultural and historical exploration inside the château.

Archaeology, Museums and Special Collections

Archeopark Všestary is the sixth stop on an archaeological trail. The open-air museum displays reconstructions of buildings from the Stone Age, Bronze Age and Iron Age. It also includes a cave with paintings and an exhibition about the production and use of polished stone axes in the later Stone Age. This place is especially suitable as a destination if you would like to explore archaeological themes not only through display cases, but also through reconstructed buildings and illustrative spaces.

Třebechovice is home to the Třebechovický Proboštův betlém, with more than 2,000 carved wooden parts. The nativity scene is the only one in the Czech Republic to have been declared a national cultural monument. Another cultural highlight is the building of the Museum of East Bohemia in Hradec Králové, which has held the status of a national cultural monument since 1995. The selection therefore ranges from archaeological reconstructions and historic domestic culture to an exceptionally large carved nativity scene.

Regional Flavour

Hradecký kapr is also part of the district’s identity: it has been certified as a regional product since 2020. If you would like to consider regional products alongside the landscape and culture during your trip, this carp provides a specific culinary connection to the area.
