Dobřenice: Discover Baroque Castle and Sacred Architecture

Dobřenice offers a remarkable concentration of Baroque architecture and historic details. The castle, the Church of St. Clement, a chapel to the east, and small monuments along the roads tell of different periods and make the place an interesting destination for anyone seeking culture beyond the major cities. In addition, an annual cycle ride through the Urbanická brázda is part of the local experience.

Dobřenice Castle and Its Historic Ensemble

Dobřenice Castle was built in 1693 in Baroque style on the site of a former fortress. The choice of the building site connects the Baroque complex with the earlier fortress and thus points to an older layer of the town’s history. It is a rural feudal manor with a complex of farm buildings and an especially complex architectural development. The focus is therefore not only on a single building, but on a historically developed ensemble.

The castle grounds include park terraces, a Lion Gate, the stables, a park, and the Weinrich family crypt. These individual components give the castle area various architectural and spatial accents. Another representative crypt is located in Dobřenice: the Löwenstein family crypt was built in 1935–1936 according to designs by Palouš. Alongside the Weinrich family crypt, the Löwenstein crypt is therefore also part of Dobřenice’s historic heritage.

Baroque Churches and Chapels

East of Dobřenice stands the Chapel of St. Anne, a Baroque building from 1738. At a crossroads in the direction of Syrovátka, a Baroque statue of St. John of Nepomuk from 1729 also recalls the region’s religious and artistic character.

The Church of St. Clement was built in 1739 on the site of a wooden church dating from the 14th century. Its richly ornamented Baroque design makes it an important architectural monument of the town. The Baroque complex dating from 1740 is also an example of Baroque architecture and the design of rural settlement spaces. The richly ornamented church thus combines Baroque sacred architecture with the design of rural settlement spaces.

The church grounds include a cemetery raised noticeably above the surrounding terrain. From the parish house, it is accessible via an interior staircase and a wrought-iron gate dating from 1913.

Cycling Through the Urbanická brázda

Since 2004, the annual cycle ride through the Urbanická brázda has taken place at the end of the summer holidays. For your travel planning, this event provides a clear seasonal highlight and complements Dobřenice’s cultural and historical attractions with an organized cycling event.
