The Bystřice flows through Dohalice. The village’s history includes the former Gothic fortress and events of the 19th century.

Fortress Traces and the History of 1866

The imposing Baroque granary in Dohalice presumably stands on the site of the former Dohalice fortress. It is a remnant of the former Gothic fortress; traces of Renaissance and Baroque alterations have also been preserved in its masonry. The building is therefore not only an agricultural structure, but also a visible record of various construction phases.

Dohalice is also located in the area where a decisive phase of the Austro-Prussian War of 1866 took place.

Church, War Graves and Village Square

The present Church of St John the Baptist was built in 1894–1896 on the site of a rotunda that collapsed in 1888. The building is a hall-like, three-nave church with a polygonally closed presbytery, a rectangular sacristy on the south side and a prismatic tower in front of the west façade. The architecture is worth a closer look because, beyond its date, it vividly conveys the form of the church.

Four war graves beside the church wall in Dohaličky recall the area’s historical character. They are marked by sandstone plinths and cast-iron crosses, with each cross bearing a different inscription. A statue of St John of Nepomuk from 1832 also stands in the village square in Dohalice. The “BRIGÁDA KNEBEL” monument depicts a standing lion trampling a snake.

The Bystřice and Perseus by the Water

A distinctive feature outside the immediate village square is the statue of Perseus on the bank of the Bystřice, in the meadows between Dohalice and Sadová. It is a remnant of the former park at Sadová Chateau, which burned down and was abandoned in 1744. The statue was created in 1844 from coarse-grained sandstone. Together with the river, it forms a landscape in which a single work of art points to the vanished chateau complex.

Local Events and Routes

Community events are also part of the documented history of the village. The second edition of “Slavnosti chleba” in Horní Dohalice took place on Saturday, 8 August, as a neighbourhood festival. Local bakers organised the event, which revolved around various types of bread.

For “Pěšky i na kole kolem Dohalic”, the route began at the school in Dohaličky between 14:00 and 15:00 and ended at the Sokol Hall in Dohalice. Participants could choose from a blue 40-kilometre route, a green 18-kilometre route and a red 6.6-kilometre route.
