Stěžery: Castle, Protected Heritage Ensemble and Trails
Stěžery between a Heritage Ensemble and the Landscape
Stěžery combines a remarkable local history with paths through the landscape and its own beer-making tradition. At the centre is the Kostel sv. Marka church complex: in the village centre, it includes a freestanding bell tower built in the Moorish style, a cemetery, a statue of Saint Florian and access to a castle cellar. Even within this compact thematic area, the village therefore offers different historical perspectives.
Kostel sv. Marka and the History of the Castle
The complex is designated as a protected heritage ensemble. It includes not only the church and bell tower, but also the enclosing wall with its gate and wickets, the statue of Saint Florian, the cellar and the plots of the site. Those interested in architectural history and organically developed village settings will therefore find more than a single building here: the individual components have been preserved as a unified heritage area.
The castle complex in Stěžery also preserves historical traces. A substantial two-storey granary has survived from the former farmyard. The present-day castle was created in 1802–1803 by rebuilding and extending the original fortress. A west wing was added; both wings received mansard roofs and an Empire appearance. The history of the castle complements the sacred focus of the church complex with the transformation of an earlier fortress into a castle.
Walking Trail, Cycle Path and Small Discoveries
For a more leisurely exploration, the Potkávačka za humny trail leads through the landscape around Stěžery. Along the trail are an insect hotel and a herb garden. Near Stěžírky, there are also two benches and a swing. These specific stops give the walk different points of reference and show how the trail combines the landscape with small places for observation and rest.
Those who prefer to explore Stěžery on two wheels can follow the Proti proudu času cycle path. The route is 28.1 km long and starts and ends at the Stěžery municipal office. The starting point is therefore also the destination of the described route; no further information about its course or difficulty is available for this page.
Beer Tradition and Former Educational Programmes
The Pivovar Beránek brewery is also part of the local history. The brewery produces bottom-fermented beers in the historic premises of a former granary built in 1732. Pivovar Beránek includes a restaurant where guests can stop for a meal and taste the beers directly on site. The place thus combines the use of a historic building with a contemporary gastronomic tradition.
For families looking for an educational aspect, ZOOPARK Stěžery is associated with a clearly documented former offering: in 2021–2022, it provided educational programmes designed to foster children's interest in nature conservation, ecological awareness and environmental education. These programmes should be regarded as an offering from those years, not as a current event announcement.
