Hrádek Between the Castle Park, Local History and Forest Trails

Hrádek combines a remarkable local history with cultural monuments, the castle park of Hrádek u Nechanic and trails through the forest. If you would like to combine traces of history and experiences in nature during your stay in the Czech Republic, you will find various points of interest here: an early Baroque church, the remains of a former fortress, access to a traditional castle park and a walk to a viewpoint.

History That Remains Visible in the Village

The settlement of Hrádek was first mentioned in written records in 1377 in connection with the nobleman Bořek of Hrádek. A later chapter of the village’s history can be seen on the grounds of the former Hrádek fortress: a visible circular rampart is still preserved on plot No. 15. The rampart is therefore not a fully preserved fortification, but a tangible relic of the former site.

Another important historical point of reference is St. George’s Church. It is registered as an immovable cultural monument in the Central List of Cultural Monuments of the Czech Republic under registration number 29516/6-620. The single-nave early Baroque church has been documented as a wooden parish church since 1384. The church was destroyed during the Thirty Years’ War; in 1692, it was rebuilt as a masonry church. For a cultural tour of discovery through Hrádek, the church therefore provides both architectural and historical orientation.

Castle Park of Hrádek u Nechanic

Part of the castle park of Hrádek u Nechanic lies in Hrádek. The park was established in 1844 and today covers approximately 18 hectares. Its history is connected with Hrádek u Nechanic Castle in Lubno u Nechanic, which František Arnošt, Count of Harrach, had built from 1839 to 1857 as a representative summer residence for the Harrach count’s family.

An important distinction regarding visits is documented: The castle park can normally be visited without a guide. Special events and guided tours may constitute exceptions.

Hiking and Cycling with Different Destinations

In addition to its historical themes, Hrádek offers a clear selection of options for walks and cycling trips. The walk to the Jehlický Hill viewpoint follows a red hiking trail through the forest to a shelter with a view. The route thus combines exercise in the forest with a clear destination. For a stay with children or travelers with different activity levels, such a tour can enable a different way of spending the day than exploring the church, fortress rampart and castle history.

Cyclists can also include the cultural destinations in their route planning: Cycle Route 144 connects the municipality of Hrádek with Hrádek u Nechanic Castle. Another route leads through a gate to the castle’s side gate; from there, you can continue on to the castle park. The routes therefore differ in their focus: The red hiking trail leads through the forest to a viewpoint, while the connections described have the castle grounds and park as their destination.
