Lubno between castle culture and quiet traces of history

Lubno combines a small local history with varied discoveries in the Nechanicko region. Visitors will find traces of a vanished fortress, monuments in the village landscape, and routes connecting Lubno with Hrádek and Nechanice. This makes it possible to combine a stay with culture, walks, and cycling, without the individual experiences having the same character.

Hrádek u Nechanic Castle and the landscape park

One particularly impressive destination is Hrádek u Nechanic Castle. The castle was built between 1839 and 1857 in the Romantic Windsor Gothic style as a representative residence of the Harrach noble family. Several tours are open to visitors. They present aristocratic life in the reception rooms, private apartments, and guest rooms, turning a visit to the castle into a discovery of different areas of life rather than merely an exterior viewing.

The castle includes an extensive English landscape park that invites visitors to take a walk. Café Anny z Harrachu is located directly in the castle building, near the Chapel of St. Anne. During the season, it offers indoor and outdoor seating; card payments are accepted. Castle architecture, the park, and time spent in the historic building thus form part of one cohesive visitor experience.

The former fortress of Lubno

Lubno itself also has a history that only reveals itself upon closer examination. In the early history of the settlement, there was a fortress here. Its now-vanished castle-site area lay on the northeastern edge of the village by the Bystřice, before the stream was regulated. On the opposite northern bank lies the Vyšehrad locality, which is associated with the former fortress of Lubno. Today, there are meadows there without any recognizable traces in the terrain.

Nevertheless, the past has not been left entirely without material evidence. In the area of the former fortress site, oak piles buried deep in the ground, as well as medieval pottery from the 14th and 15th centuries, have been found in recent times. At the Vyšehrad locality, archaeologists J. L. Píč and L. Domečka found fragments of an old settlement as early as before 1913. This is interpreted as a vanished early Slavic settlement or as the original location or a part of Lubno. For a walk through the village, this means that not every historical site is visible today; some can only be understood through their location and the surviving tradition.

Hiking and cycling around Lubno

The red-marked hiking trail runs via Hrádek and Jehlický vech to the edge of Lubno and onward to Nechanice. In Nechanice, the trail ends at Štrossovy sady, where there are graves from the 1866 war. The route therefore connects the landscape, castle culture, and a historic place of remembrance.

For cyclists, the landscape in the Nechanicko region is predominantly flat and slightly hilly in places; it is suitable for recreational cycling. As part of the reconstruction of the road between Lubno and Nechanice in 2009, a separate path for pedestrians and cyclists was also created. Monuments in the village landscape

Several smaller architectural and commemorative features complement the history of the village. In front of the former Andrlova hospoda inn stands a protected Baroque sandstone statue of St. John the Baptist with a lamb. Next to it is a somewhat older masonry well. In the center of Lubno, a monument commemorates the victims of the 1866 battle. At the bend toward Dolní Přím, there is also a stone belfry with a crucifixion monument.
