Starý Bydžov between church history and nature

Historical traces in the village centre

The Kostel sv. Prokopa church was originally a Romanesque building dating from around 1200. The time span therefore extends from its Romanesque origins around 1200 to the gravestones from the 16th century. It stands in the centre of Starý Bydžov at a crossroads leading towards Stará Skřeněř, Nový Bydžov, Hlušice and Křičov. This precise location makes the church an easily identifiable point for orientation in the village. Eight gravestones from the 16th century have also been preserved at the church. For a short stay with an interest in regional history, it is therefore not only the building itself that matters, but also the preserved surroundings.

The name Jan Malát is also associated with Starý Bydžov. He was born in Starý Bydžov on 16 June 1843. A monument commemorates him in the village square; it consists of three sandstone blocks with a memorial plaque. Another historical trace leads back to 1893: during drainage work in the northwestern part of the cadastral area, the hoard find of the Únětice culture from Starý Bydžov was discovered. The find site was therefore not at the church or in the village square, but in another part of the cadastral area. The find comprises eight disc-shaped earrings and is considered the largest assemblage of this jewellery found in Czechia.

A remarkable ash tree in the southeast

The natural landmark Jasan u Starého Bydžova complements the historical sights with a striking landscape feature. The ash tree has a trunk circumference of 660 centimetres and is considered one of the five largest ash trees in Czechia. It grows in the southeast of Starý Bydžov, to the left of the road to Nový Bydžov.
