St. George’s Church and parish history

St. George’s Church in Hněvčeves has been recorded as a parish church since the 14th century. It is a single-nave building with a rectangular floor plan and a right-angled presbytery. A particularly distinctive architectural detail is the late Gothic profiled portal. A single-nave building focuses the church interior on one main nave. The presbytery is the liturgical area of the church. A profiled portal is structured by projecting and recessed forms; in Hněvčeves, this detail is part of the late Gothic design of St. George’s Church.

The rectory is also part of Hněvčeves’s historical character. It has a mansard roof and was built in 1767. A mansard roof is characterized by a broken roof slope in which the lower section is steeper. The composer Jan Křtitel Vaňhal provides another cultural connection; he worked at the local parish school in 1759. Vaňhal’s work at the parish school adds a musical connection to the locality’s history alongside its architectural history.

Commemorative culture in the locality

Next to the church in Hněvčeves stands a war memorial to the victims of the First World War. Its location makes this memorial site another component of the locality’s historic appearance. TJ Sokol Hněvčeves shows another side of Hněvčeves. The association regularly organizes football and floorball training sessions as well as corresponding matches. Floorball is a form of indoor hockey played with sticks and a lightweight ball. Floorball complements football with a second team sport. In addition, TJ Sokol Hněvčeves organizes tourist and educational trips. These trips are not part of the training and match schedule, but constitute a separate association format. Community life therefore includes both regular sports events and organized trips.
