Nechanice – Local History, Routes and Protected Nature
Nechanice between Local History and Routes
Nechanice combines vivid local history with marked trails and documented traces in the landscape within a compact area. If you would like to get to know a place not only as an overnight destination but also through its history and surroundings, the Tvrziště Nechanice provides a particularly tangible starting point. It is a remnant of a water fortress that was surrounded by three ramparts and a moat.
The Tvrziště lies north of the built-up area of Nechanice on the right bank of the Bystřice. It is approximately 200 m from the northeastern corner of the Nechanice market square with its church.
History in the Townscape
Several individual monuments provide additional historical points of reference during your stay. At the site where the birthplace of Jan Křtitel Vaňhal once stood in Nechanice, a memorial plaque was unveiled in 1998. Another vivid representation is the sculptural group featuring Saint Anne embracing the Virgin Mary; Mary carries the Christ Child on her left arm.
On Husovo náměstí stands a column depicting Saint Anne, the Virgin Mary and the Christ Child. It is probably a free copy of an original Baroque stone sculpture by an unknown artist from 1737. The careful classification as a probable copy is precisely what makes this monument distinctive: alongside its religious motif, it also points to the transmission of an older Baroque design.
The memory of wartime events is also visible in the town. The monument to members of the Red Army is a grave beside the wall separating the old and new cemeteries of Nechanice. It documents events at the end of the Second World War in the region. Štrossovy sady also contain several monuments to those who fell in the War of 1866.
Marked Routes for Different Excursions
For exploring beyond the town centre, marked tourist route 117 begins at the square in Nechanice. It leads via Hrádek u Nechanic Chateau, the church in Hrádek, Libčany, Lhota pod Libčany and Osice. The sequence connects several stops and is therefore suitable as a guide for anyone who does not want to limit their excursion to a single monument.
Cyclists will also find two route options described differently. Cycle route 4289 begins in Nechanice and continues via Na Křemenci, Zvíkov and Babice. Cycle route 4292 passes through Nechanice. When planning, you can therefore choose between a route with a documented starting point in the town and another cycle route that passes through Nechanice along its course.
The Bystřice Protected Area
Another nature-related dimension belongs to the surroundings of Nechanice: the Bystřice protected area serves to protect the habitat and population of the critically endangered thick-shelled river mussel (Unio crassus).
