Libčany: Village History, Ponds and Local Traditions

Libčany combines a layered local history with ponds, an educational trail and vibrant regional traditions. Those who want to combine culture and landscape during their stay will find various points of interest here: historic buildings, traces of prehistoric settlement, bodies of water near the village and seasonal events connected with fishing.

Churches, Fortresses and Local History

A prominent cultural landmark is the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. It was founded in the Romanesque style at the beginning of the 13th century and rebuilt around the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries. At the same time, it is considered an important architectural monument of Libčany. It therefore represents a local history whose visible traces span several centuries.

The former fortifications are also part of this historic picture. Turyně Fortress once stood on an island in a pond in the centre of Libčany and served as the seat of the Lords of Libčany. A second fortress was built on the site where Libčany Castle later stood; the primary school is now located there. Around the middle of the 16th century, the fortress fell into ruin, and a single-storey Renaissance chateau was later built in its place.

The history of the village reaches back even further: skeletal graves of the Únětice culture provide evidence of prehistoric settlement in the landscape around Libčany. A more recent cultural highlight was the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the puppet-theatre showcase “O cenu Matěje Kopeckého” in Libčany.

Ponds, Educational Trail and Seasonal Impressions

Kočár Pond, also referred to as an open-air swimming pool, covers about 3,300 m² and lies near the centre of Libčany. The “Cesta do minulosti Libčan a Hvozdnic” educational trail begins on its bank; its name already points to the historical perspective of the route. When the frost is strong enough, Kočár Pond is used by skaters of all generations and skill levels. This makes it a place where the way the landscape is experienced changes noticeably with the seasons.

Other bodies of water reveal different sides of the village. With an area of 4,000 m², Brigádník Pond is the largest of Libčany’s ponds. Turyň Pond, by contrast, is located on private property and is not open to the public. Another pond in Tovární Park is used mainly for recreation; a wooden footbridge crosses the water there. Between Libčany and Hřibsko, there is also Libušina studánka, a spring in the forest associated with a local tradition concerning healing water.

Fishing and Local Traditions

The regular draining of Kočár Pond includes the sale of fish and fish specialities. The Spolek Brigádník association organises traditional pond drainings in Libčany. These events give concrete expression to the connection between bodies of water, community life and regional food culture.
