Čistěves – historic trails and monuments at Svíb

Čistěves is situated in a varied, hilly landscape approximately 12 km northwest of Hradec Králové in the direction of Jičín. This density of memorial markers makes the forest a place where the history of the landscape can be understood not only through individual monuments, but also through numerous scattered traces.

At the edge of the Svíb forest stands the monument to the Austrian 8th Battalion of Field Jägers. It commemorates the Battle of Hradec Králové in 1866 and was created according to a design by the Viennese professor Viktor Tilgner. The monument depicts an Austrian field Jäger of the 8th Battalion, larger than life and carved from Istrian limestone. The Pruský IR 27 monument is also part of Čistěves’s historical character. It stands at its original location and consists of a pylon topped by an artillery cross. It therefore differs clearly from the monument to the Austrian 8th Battalion of Field Jägers: here, the original placement, bilingual inscriptions, and the distinctive form of the pylon take centre stage.

A clearly time-specific addition is Rozsvícený Svíb, which was held in its 18th edition in 2024. The traditional programme included a field mass and a commemorative ceremony at Myslivec. The event therefore also refers to the culture of remembrance surrounding Svíb, but when planning a trip it should be understood as an event held in 2024, not as a statement about a future programme.

In addition to its memorial sites, Čistěves also has natural points of interest. The Šust fishpond lies in the western part of the undeveloped area; it forms the local LBC 1 biocentre. Part of the Svíb forest is designated as the regionally significant RBC 983 Svíb biocentre.
