Lochenice: Trotina, Cycle Paths and Educational Trails

Lochenice combines natural landscapes, local history and several clearly described cycle paths and educational trails. This makes the place particularly interesting for you if you do not want to limit your trip to just one destination, but instead want to combine landscapes, historical topics and active exploration. A prominent point of reference is the Trotina Nature Monument in the cadastral area of Lochenice.

Natural landscape along the Trotina

The Trotina Nature Monument protects a separated side arm of the Elbe and part of the Trotina stream. Fragments of softwood floodplain forests have been preserved along the old Elbe arm and the stream. Softwood floodplain forests are areas close to the banks with softwood trees; fragments of them have been preserved in the nature monument. The designation therefore refers to a specifically described landscape area with a watercourse, a former river arm and preserved floodplain remnants.

Cycle paths and historical educational trails

Several routes make Lochenice part of different excursion directions. The educational trail “Battle of Hradec Králové 3 July 1866 – Retreat of the Austrian Army” leads from the Museum of East Bohemia to Lochenice together with the red-marked route along the Elbe Cycle Path. This connection places the locality in a historical context while also linking it to a marked cycle route. The full-day circular route across the 1866 battlefield reaches Lochenice via Elbe Cycle Path No. 2. Its yellow-marked section leads through Lochenice and Neděliště to Chlum. In Lochenice, the circular route crosses the railway line and connects to the yellow-marked hiking route. The two historical routes therefore differ specifically: one connects the Museum of East Bohemia with Lochenice along the Elbe Cycle Path, while the other leads across the battlefield to Chlum. Another option is the cycle path from Hradec Králové to Kuks. After crossing the weir near Předměřice nad Labem, it continues to Lochenice. After crossing the Trotina stream, the cycle path continues on a paved road towards Smiřice. This section therefore includes the weir near Předměřice nad Labem, Lochenice, the crossing of the Trotina stream and the paved road towards Smiřice. The route towards Smiřice thus differs from the historical route through Neděliště to Chlum. For trip planning, this reveals different types of routes: historical circular routes, a connection between Hradec Králové and Kuks, and a section along the Elbe cycle paths. The prehistoric archaeological educational trail, circular route No. 1, runs through Lochenice, which is listed as the fifth stop. Together with the historical educational trail from 1866, it expands the range of options with an archaeological perspective, without combining the two subjects into a single circular walk.

The Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary is associated with Lochenice and complements the natural and route-related attractions with a cultural connection to the locality.
