Nepolisy
Nepolisy is a destination for anyone who wants to discover several layers of history within a small area. An unusually large medieval village square with a rectangular layout, the highly visible Church of St. Mary Magdalene and a long, well-documented local history give a stay here a clear cultural profile. At the same time, a marked cycle path runs through Nepolisy, connecting Chlumec nad Cidlinou with Nový Bydžov. When choosing your accommodation, you can therefore weigh a visit focused on local history against a travel idea centered on cycling.
A Village Square with Unusual Dimensions
The earliest evidence of settlement in the area around Nepolisy dates from the 1st to the 4th century AD. The first surviving written mention of Nepolisy dates from 1299; at that time, the place was called Lepolisy.
The structure of the village is particularly vivid in the village square. Its rectangular shape and unusual size point to a medieval type of square that gives Nepolisy a distinctive appearance. Numerous linden trees and horse chestnuts bloom there in May and June. The square therefore combines a clearly recognizable historic layout with a seasonally changing village setting.
Church, Fortress and Vila Černých
The Roman Catholic Church of St. Mary Magdalene is a highly visible landmark of Nepolisy. The Boží kříž stands in the park by the church; the statue of Saint John of Nepomuk stands by the lower pond, while the statue of Panny Marie Boží stands by the middle pond. The building was reconstructed in 1998. The earlier local history also includes the former fortress of Nepolisy: it was uninhabited in 1513 and subsequently gradually fell into disrepair. This does not refer to a surviving or currently accessible fortress complex; the fortress remains relevant as a historical reference point in the development of the village.
Another notable name is the private Vila Černých. It is the birthplace of JUDr. Josef Černý, Minister of the Interior of the First Czechoslovak Republic. The original exterior appearance was preserved during the reconstruction. The fact that it is identified as a private villa is particularly important for travel planning: the building is part of Nepolisy’s history, but this does not imply that it is open to public tours.
Archaeological finds discovered in 1904 in a field behind the local cemetery in Nepolisy are kept at the museum in Nový Bydžov.
Cycle Path and Documented Events
The marked cycle path through Nepolisy connects Chlumec nad Cidlinou with Nový Bydžov. The 6th edition of the “Nepoliská pětka” running competition included a 5.2 km main course. The 25th edition of the “Nepoliská stovka” cycling tourism event took place on 15 August 2020.
