Chlumec nad Cidlinou between Architectural Heritage, Nature and Family Experiences
Chlumec nad Cidlinou offers several different ways to experience a stay: historic architecture, a museum covering local and regional history, an educational trail through the town, a distinctive landscape and attractions explicitly presented as family entertainment. If you would like to combine culture and nature, you will find specific points of interest here both for that purpose and for a trip with the whole family.
Church, Museum and an Educational Trail through the Town
A prominent cultural landmark is the Church of St Ursula, the deanery church on Klicperovo náměstí. It was built under the rule of the Pernštejn family from 1536 to 1543. The building combines Late Gothic with the early Renaissance and is considered the only surviving structure from the Pernštejn era in the Pocidliní region. At this specific location, therefore, there is not only a religious building but also a preserved testimony to this historical period.
The Loreta Museum presents an exhibition about Chlumec nad Cidlinou and the surrounding area. The focus is predominantly on the modern era. In addition, there is a smaller section on archaeological finds from prehistory and the Middle Ages, as well as on the remains of the former water castle. The history of the museum building itself is also multifaceted: it is located in a former pilgrimage site that later served as a hospital and poorhouse. The building was reconstructed into its present form in 2001 and has served as the town museum since 2002.
The “Město v zahradách” educational trail leads visitors through Chlumec nad Cidlinou and introduces important buildings and architectural monuments. It complements the individual cultural monuments with a coherent perspective on the town and focuses attention on its architectural history.
Pamětník Nature Reserve
The Pamětník nature reserve protects several different habitats. These include wet meadows, wetlands in former and partially flooded sand pits, small gravel forests and thermophilous meadow communities. Rare plant, insect and bird species occur in these protected areas. Pamětník therefore represents a landscape whose distinctive character arises from the coexistence of different wetland, woodland and meadow areas. For your travel planning, this natural area offers an independent contrast to the town’s churches, museums and architectural monuments.
Family Entertainment and Cultural Events
Fajnpark Chlumec nad Cidlinou is presented as entertainment for the whole family. Its attractions are divided into the areas of education, adventure, sport and nature. The four themed areas clearly distinguish the range of activities and make it a separate element of the experience alongside the historic town tour and the natural-history impressions of Pamětník.
Klicperův Chlumec also adds an annual amateur theatre festival. It is organised with the support of the Hradec Králové Region and the town of Chlumec nad Cidlinou. The festival places a different cultural emphasis than the church, museum and educational trail: the focus here is on the regularly recurring event centred on amateur theatre.
Karlova Koruna and Courtly History
Karlova Koruna was built from 1721 to 1723 with the participation of the architect Jan Blažej Santini-Aichel and the master builder František Maxmilián Kaňka. A traditional guided tour covers the history of one of the most prominent noble families. In addition, a new indoor exhibition provides insights into horses and parforce hunting. Karlova Koruna thus broadens the cultural offering with architectural history, aristocratic culture and an exhibition with a clearly defined thematic focus.
