Discover Písek

Písek is a place of unusual connections: sporting competitions run through the landscape, a historic fishpond shapes the local history, and traditional events bring together food, music and community. Písek also lies on the southern edge of the East Bohemian Table. Those looking to create a trip with a variety of experiences will therefore find not just one attraction here, but several distinct themes.

Sporting experiences with clearly defined formats

The Písecký duathlon consists of a 3 km run, a 30 km road-cycling section and another 3 km run. In the 2025 edition, the cycling route led from Písek through Kosice, Kosičky, Babice, Trnava, Boharyně, Zvíkov, Barchov, Barchůvek, Měník and Bydžovská Lhotka to Mlékosrby and back to Písek.

The Písecký koloběh offers a different format. This 5 km competition is intended for mixed pairs. One person runs while the other rides a mountain bike. In the 2025 edition, the approximately 5 km route also included crossing the Bystřice through a ford. The miniduathlon, in turn, uses shorter distances: a 1 km run is followed by 5 km on a mountain bike and another 1 km run. Písek therefore offers several clearly distinct competition formats side by side.

Pond history and archaeological features

The history of the landscape includes the historic Písecký Pond, which covered 114 hectares. An archaeological discovery takes us even further back: In Písek near Chlumec nad Cidlinou, archaeologists uncovered the remains of a dam belonging to a late-medieval fishpond, complete with an outlet or overflow. In terms of size and state of preservation, this discovered dam has no comparable counterpart in East Bohemian archaeology. The figure of 114 hectares refers exclusively to the pond’s historical size; independently of this, the discovered dam is an extraordinary find for regional archaeology.

Remembrance, food and local festivals

The Památník Svobody was erected in Písek in 1920 in memory of local residents who fell in the First World War. This memorial site is complemented thematically by separately documented events that reflect the present-day character of the place. Sousedské vaření a pečení is a recurring culinary gathering at the Písek fire station. It included children baking sweet and savory strudels, as well as a competition for the best Moravian tlačené koláče.

At Písecké posvícení, posvícenské koláčky are enjoyed alongside a public family program featuring music, dancing, a children’s carnival and a disco. The festival traditionally takes place on the first weekend in November. The Písecký turnaj v nohejbalu is also part of the local events calendar: it is a traditional sports tournament for pairs; the 2025 edition was the 18th edition. Fishing competitions were also held at Hejbánek on October 4, 2025, organized by SDH Písek.
