Sendražice

Sendražice combines a landscape shaped by forestry and agriculture with marked trails and noteworthy cultural monuments. The marked nature trail and cycling circuit lead through this landscape. The church, farm complex and memorial sites complement the trails with architectural and commemorative sites from different periods. This allows the town to be viewed both through its landscape and through its historic buildings and culture of remembrance.

Landscape and trails around Sendražice

The Naučná stezka nature trail is marked, moderately difficult and suitable for pedestrians and cyclists. In some sections, it follows marked hiking and cycling routes. Near Sendražice, it divides; one branch leads through Sendražice to Hořiněves. This enables cyclists to clearly distinguish between the divided nature trail and the historic circuit route passing through several places in the region.

For cyclists, the Okruh bojištěm bitvy 1866 circuit is also significant. It runs via Neděliště, Sendražice and Lochenice towards Hradec Králové and is associated with the Battle of 1866. Unlike the nature trail, with its branch near Sendražice, the circuit connects several places in a historic cycling loop.

Church and rural architecture

The Church of St. Stanislaus has a Gothic core dating from the mid-14th century and was given a Baroque appearance at the beginning of the 18th century. It stands on a prominent spur at the northeastern edge of Sendražice. The cemetery, enclosed by a perimeter wall, is roughly oval in shape. The church site is thus defined by its elevated position and enclosed cemetery grounds.

Another example of the local architectural history is Farm Complex No. 74. It is enclosed on all four sides and comprises a residential building, a barn and former stables. As a Neoclassical rural farm complex, it is typical of the Hradecko area and dates from around the mid-19th century. The residential building, barn and former stables belong to the same enclosed farm structure and illustrate the layout of a rural homestead.

Memorial sites and local history

The monument to the members of the Austrian 9th Field Jäger Battalion is a monumental Secessionist sandstone monument in the form of a stele. It is dedicated to four soldiers of the Austrian 9th Field Jäger Battalion and to Josef Holdík from Sendražice, a former fighter. Under the memorial linden tree there are also a small bell tower and an atonement cross. These features complement the stele with additional memorial sites in the same place.

The written history of the town also reaches far back: Sendražice is first documented in 1297. At that time, Ondřej ze Sendražic owned land there. The documented history of the town thus begins in the late 13th century.
