Černilov – Churches, Landscapes and Local Traditions

Černilov combines gently rolling, agriculture-dominated countryside with a remarkable variety of churches and local traditions. The town stretches for several kilometres along the Černilovský potok stream. This makes it a destination where nature observation, the history of sacred architecture and community life bring together a range of interests when planning your trip.

Landscape along the Černilovský potok

The course of the Černilovský potok and the agriculture-dominated surroundings give Černilov a distinctly rural character. In clear conditions, views extend to the ridges of the Giant Mountains and the Orlické Mountains. These distant views add another scale to the immediate landscape: alongside the stream and gentle elevations, the larger mountain landscape remains present on the horizon.

Churches with different historical traces

A prominent landmark is the Church of the Finding of St Stephen. It was built between 1752 and 1756 according to designs by Donato Morazzi of Chrudim. Its slender tower is just under 40 metres high and visible from far across the surrounding area. Inside is a sandstone baptismal font dating from 1895. The construction period, tower and baptismal font thus bring together several historical layers in a single sacred building.

A different architectural language is represented by the middle Evangelical Church of the Czech Brethren in Černilov. It was built in the pseudo-Romanesque style and has a round apse facing east. The tower above the west façade bears the inscription “POKOJ VÁM”. The furnishings also include a single-manual organ and wall inscriptions with quotations from the Gospel of Luke and the Psalms. Those interested in details rather than merely an exterior view will find several distinctive features here that reveal the church’s design.

The town’s historical heritage also includes the former Evangelical Church of the Augsburg Confession. It was completed in 1824. In 1969, it was taken over by the local National Committee; it was subsequently converted into a funeral hall. This chronological development should be retained when classifying the building: it is a former church that was later used as a funeral hall.

Community and local traditions

The cultural and community centre in Černilov serves as a leisure centre for residents of Černilov and the surrounding area. It hosts courses, group activities, lectures, sports and exercise programmes, concerts, discussion events, as well as meetings of interest and support groups. It therefore represents the community side of the town and complements its sacred and landscape-related themes with a broad range of activities.

Another local tradition is the children’s fishing competition at Dolejšák. The annual event is intended for young anglers and their families.
