Hořiněves
Hořiněves combines cultural history with distinctive memorial sites and walkable paths through the landscape. The main points of interest are the Václav Hanka Memorial House, the Church of Saint Procopius, Hořiněves Château, the Hořiněves memorial lime trees and the Hořiněvská Bažantnice educational trail. This gives the town different points of interest for a stay, depending on whether you are more interested in notable figures, architectural history, historical events or nature experiences.
Cultural history in Hořiněves
The Václav Hanka Memorial House is dedicated to the life and work of Václav Hanka. A permanent exhibition displays photographs and documents, making a visit an encounter with a specific historical figure. The building itself is also part of the town’s history: it is a representative example of a wooden folk building from 1720.
If you would like to visit the Memorial House as part of a guided tour with commentary, you must always reserve it in advance.
Church, château and memorial sites
The present-day Church of Saint Procopius was built in 1707 on the site of an earlier church and, as a Baroque church, is another important building in Hořiněves. An unusual detail is the cannonballs embedded in its walls. Nearby, graves and monuments commemorate the fighting of the Austro-Prussian War of 1866. The church grounds thus combine sacred architectural history with visible traces of the military past.
Hořiněves Château also represents a clearly identifiable historical period. During a reconstruction from 1674 to 1676, it acquired its fully Baroque appearance. Together with the Memorial House and the church, it creates a cultural profile in which different centuries and architectural forms can be recognized side by side.
Memorial lime trees and the woodland section of the educational trail
The protected Hořiněves memorial lime trees are among the independent natural and memorial sites. They are estimated to be more than 500 years old. Access is via a local field path: from the former water tower, go left and then continue for approximately 200 meters. This precise route description makes the site identifiable as a separate destination within an exploration of Hořiněves, without equating it with the sights in the town center.
The Hořiněvská Bažantnice educational trail provides an important current distinction between the path and its information facilities. The woodland section of the trail is accessible on foot. At the same time, most of the interactive and information panels were damaged after a natural disaster in 2025 and removed from the forest. Those who choose the educational trail will therefore find a walkable woodland section, but should not expect the complete former set of panels.
Another starting point
The “Z Hořiněvsi do Čištěvsi” route begins at the birthplace of Václav Hanka in Hořiněves. This starting point complements the Memorial House with another location associated with Hanka, without the two destinations being the same building or offering the same type of visit.
