Kratonohy – Culture, River Landscape and Cycling Route

Kratonohy combines historic landmarks, rural architecture and a landscape shaped by the Bystřice. A cycling connection also runs through the village and continues along the river. If you would like to combine culture and outdoor activity on your trip, Kratonohy offers several different points of interest: from the centrally located church and the history of the château to the waterways north of the village.

Church, Château and Rural Heritage

The Church of St. James the Elder stands on a slight elevation in the central part of Kratonohy. Its origins date back to the Gothic period; between 1707 and 1710, it was remodelled in the Baroque style. Thus, two clearly recognisable historical periods meet in one place. The château is also part of Kratonohy’s history. A Baroque château that still exists today was built on the site of the former fortress under the Kinský family. During the peasant uprising of 1775, peasants burned down the château. Later alterations impaired its architectural character. For an understanding of the village, it is therefore not only the period of construction that is interesting, but also the changes the building underwent over the course of its history. A particularly unusual detail can be found in the village district of Michnovka: a wooden fire bell tower stands there, built on posts and counted among the local cultural monuments. A small bell is located in the fork of the branches, with a conical metal roof above it. Kratonohy also preserves traditional small-farm homesteads with farm buildings and surviving barns. These buildings give the village a distinct rural cultural and historical character. Music and customs are also part of the region’s heritage. Some surviving songs by Jiří Volný were published in Hradec Králové in 1822 under the title “Jiřího Volného písně veselé”. The Masopust festival is also traditionally held in Kratonohy as a recurring cultural event.

The Bystřice and Seasonal Recreation

North of Kratonohy, the Bystřice flows in two channels: an old river channel and a regulated new one. The Písníky, which serve for seasonal recreation, are located near Obědovice. Part of the area lies within the municipal territory of Kratonohy.

Cycling Route and Local Connections

The KČT cycling route 4199 initially runs through Kratonohy along a paved municipal road. It then turns onto a paved farm track along the Bystřice towards Roudnice. A Class II road also runs through the southern built-up area of Kratonohy. It originally carried the number 11 and is designated as 611 following renumbering. Road III/32313 connects Kratonohy with the district of Michnovka and leads towards Pravy.
