Castles and History in Plzeň-Jih

Plzeň-Jih combines impressive architectural history with trails through a varied cultural landscape. Nebílovy Castle is a particularly notable starting point: the castle is a High Baroque palace built in the early 18th century as a palace in the Viennese style. Its layout consists of two horseshoe-shaped buildings facing each other across the courtyard. Inside, there are wall paintings by Antonín Tuvora. Nebílovy Castle is also considered a cultural and social centre of southern Plzeňsko.

Přeštice also offers an important example of Baroque architecture. The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary there is the largest Baroque church in the Czech Republic outside Prague and has been a national cultural monument since 2008. In Spálené Poříčí, the National Ethnographic Museum of the Spálené Poříčí Region is located in the castle. Those interested in religious and monastic history will find another focal point at Chotěšov Monastery: it was founded between 1202 and 1210 by Blessed Hroznata and rebuilt in the Baroque style between 1734 and 1756. Today, the complex includes a museum on the history of the town and is open to the public seasonally.

Educational Trails for Active and Curious Days

The Pod Zelenou horou trail is suitable for hikers, cyclists, families with children and pushchairs. Along almost 4.5 kilometres, nine information panels combine physical activity with regional history and landscape. One of the stops is Klášter, which was built on the ruins of a 12th-century Cistercian monastery. The trail also passes Zelená Hora Castle. This makes it possible to combine an active outing with notable cultural sites without limiting the route to a single theme.

The Nebílovy educational trail also runs through the Plzeň-Jih area as a 5.7-kilometre circular route with six stops at information panels. Its content focuses on the history as well as the fauna and flora of Nebílovy and its surroundings. One of the noteworthy points is the Chapel of Saint Barbara, built above a spring in 1859. Nebílovy also has a long tradition of growing pome and stone fruit, including apples and plums.

For cyclists, Route 2126 connects Černice in Plzeň with Nebílovy. There is a large car park on the outskirts of Nebílovy, on the road from Plzeň. Another thematic perspective is offered by the “Za mlynáři od Bradavy” trail near Spálené Poříčí, which presents the history of milling in the Bradava Valley. Thus, the range of experiences in Plzeň-Jih extends from Baroque churches and castles through monastic history to natural history, fruit growing and regional craft history.
