Čižice – Granite, Village Green and Trails along the Úhlava

Čižice combines a distinctive landscape with traces of village history, regional craftsmanship and various opportunities for active days. Granite, wooded hills, rocks, paths along the Úhlava and preserved building and event traditions give the village its own character. Granite Landscape and the History of Čižice

Čižice lies in what is known as a “granite island landscape”. The local granite led to the opening of quarries that provided many residents with a livelihood. The growth of local stoneworking has been documented since around 1870. However, the history of the village goes back considerably further: the first written mention of Čižice dates from 1115; at that time, the Kladruby Monastery is said to have owned an estate there.

A particularly vivid cultural and historical element of the village green is the Chapel of Saint Adalbert, together with the nearby memorial cross. The chapel is a Baroque building from the mid-18th century. Its structure and the details of its original construction have been preserved. The village green is therefore home not only to a historic building, but also to a tangible link to the architectural and local history of Čižice.

The local annual calendar includes the Husova pouť, celebrated in Čižice on 6 July on the village green lined with linden trees. Summer entertainment events held on a dance floor in the open air are also known as “Čihule”. These two traditions show the village green as a place where history, the local community and event culture come together.

Hiking, Rocks and Water

Čižice offers various specific routes and landscape features for hiking. Jelení vrch rises above Čižice to 519 metres above sea level. At the Čižice bridge, leave the red-marked hiking trail, cross the bridge and then continue along the yellow-marked trail. A yellow-marked hiking route from Čižice also crosses a bridge over the Úhlava to the Kozí kámen rock.

In the vicinity of Čižice, the summit of Vysoká is home to a preserved rock town with pointed towers several metres high. The rocks contain several climbing routes and fixed bolts, which are also used by beginner climbers. The Vysoká woodland area also lies east of Čižice. The “Pod Smutným koutem” area features uneven-aged oak stands with diverse forest flora, including several specially protected plant species such as Solomon’s seal, Turk’s cap lily and alpine buckthorn.

The surrounding area is also suitable for different types of travel: two cycle paths run through Čižice, while the Úhlava near Čižice is used by water sports enthusiasts for paddling. Local Taste: Pivovar Bizon

Pivovar Bizon adds its own culinary note to Čižice. The family microbrewery opened in 2011 as part of the adjacent Hostinec U Bizona.
