Lužany Château as a Cultural Centerpiece

Lužany U Přeštic is a destination where architectural history, music and landscape come together. Lužany Château was rebuilt in 1886–1887 as a two-storey building with a six-storey clock tower. The ground floor houses an exhibition about the work and legacy of Josef Hlávka. Cultural exploration therefore focuses not only on the architecture, but also on the history of its important creator.

Please take the special visiting regulations into account when planning your trip: Lužany Château is not intended for visits by the general public. Access for specialists is possible only by exception, by arrangement with the president and the board of trustees of the foundation. The château thus remains a place whose history you will primarily learn about through the documented exhibition and its historical context.

Chapel and Musical History

Lužany Château is home to the Chapel of the Virgin Mary, Saint Wenceslas and Saint Anthony. It is dedicated to the Virgin Mary, Saint Wenceslas and Saint Anthony and was built in Josef Hlávka’s characteristic style with Byzantine elements. The interior paintings are by the Viennese painter Karl Jobst.

Musical history is also part of this cultural picture: Antonín Dvořák’s Mass in D major, Lužanská, Op. 86, was commissioned by Josef Hlávka for the consecration of the chapel at Lužany Château in 1887. Architecture, sacred art and musical history thus provide several distinct ways of approaching the same historic place.

Educational Trail and Protected River Landscape

Another way to experience Lužany is the “Living Memories of the Lužany Landscape” educational trail. It was ceremonially opened in Lužany on 22 March 2015 and comprises eight stations. For your travel planning, it offers a clearly defined opportunity to engage with the memories and landscape connections of the area without focusing on the château and chapel.

The Lužany Protected Area is also part of the natural landscape. It protects a preserved remnant of the meandering riverbed of the Úhlava. This preserved remnant of the riverbed creates a landscape contrast with the château architecture: in the protected area, the meandering course of the Úhlava takes center stage. Mount Běleč is located in the vicinity of Lužany. The nearby Lužanská hora hill [Lužany - Zelené] and Březník hill [Příchovice u Přeštic] are also in the surrounding area. Mount Radyně lies in the wider regional surroundings of Lužany. These different landscape connections broaden the view beyond the historic town center.
