Horšice – History, Landscape and Cycling Routes

Horšice combines local history with the landscape along Zlatý potok and the wooded hills of the surrounding area.

Church, Festivals and Historic Architectural Features

The Church of St. Matthias in Horšice was originally a Gothic building dating from around 1300 and was later remodeled in the Baroque style. It is listed as an immovable cultural monument.

Only inconspicuous traces in the terrain remain of the older Horšice fortress. Another historical trace is the large barn connected with the newer Horšice fortress, which is still standing. The two-story rectangular building measures approximately 14 × 21 m, has a mansard roof, and features massive buttresses. The contrast between the two fortifications remains visible: only traces in the terrain survive from the older fortress, while the newer one still has a large structure in the form of the barn.

The chateau in Újezd is a two-wing, single-story building; on its eastern side stands the Chapel of St. Anne, which was later added to the chateau as a Baroque chapel. A monument to gendarmerie officer Josef Šlajs stands in Nevěrná. It was erected by Tělovýchovná jednota Sokol Horšice on August 26, 1945. The monument commemorates Šlajs, who was seriously wounded there in the forest above Újezd on May 19, 1945, while searching for German soldiers, and died of his injuries on May 20, 1945. The wayside cross U křížku on the road from Horšice to Luh was also restored on September 5, 2000.

Zlatý potok and the Wooded Hills

Zlatý potok flows through Horšice and divides the village into two parts. The three highest wooded hills of Horšice lie along Zlatý potok: Holý vrch at 569 m, Nevěrná at 571 m, and Jindřín at 535 m. Nevěrná is therefore the highest of the three hills. Jindřín is home to a hillfort dating from the region’s prehistoric settlement.

Cycling Route, Memorial Tour and Orientation

Horšice lies on cycling route No. 2189. It runs along the Loupenská Háj–Horšice–Újezd–Kbelnice route. Cycling route No. 2186 passes through the administrative territory of Horšice along the Radkovice–Vitouň–Luh route. The routes therefore differ in their relationship to Horšice: No. 2189 passes through the village, while No. 2186 passes through its administrative territory.

Šlajsova pětapadesátka refers to a 50-km memorial cycling tour held to mark the anniversary of Šlajs’s death. Horšice is served by ČSAD buses. Roman Catholic services of the Přeštice parish are regularly held on Sundays in the Church of St. Matthias.
