Discover Ptenín

Ptenín combines a rich castle history with a nature trail that offers two different route options. At its heart is the grounds of Ptenín Castle: historical evidence, a remarkable façade detail and a landscape that can be explored on foot come together here. This makes Ptenín ideal if you do not want to consider cultural discoveries separately from a hike.

Several eras at Ptenín Castle

A wooden fortress is already mentioned in 1228 on the site of today’s Ptenín Castle. The site is considered to be a Gothic fortress mentioned in 1535, remodelled during the Renaissance and subsequently transformed into a Baroque château in the first half of the 18th century. For your visit, this above all represents a historical sequence that can be followed in a single location rather than being spread across several separate sights.

A special detail can be found on the façade of the south wing. During the restoration of Ptenín Castle, painted sundials were created there in 2020. Their historical presence at this location was confirmed by findings, archival photographs and statements from contemporary witnesses. The sundials add a visible element to the building’s history that extends beyond the site’s major stylistic periods.

Two types of routes around Ptenín

The Naučná stezka Ptenín–Újezdec nature trail begins directly in front of Ptenín Castle and ends in nearby Újezdec. The route is 2.5 km long and runs one way. If you are looking for a manageable connection between two places, this is a different type of route from a classic circular hike: the starting point and the end are not in the same place.

A marked continuation is a 5-km loop around Ptenínská hora that leads back to the starting point at Ptenín Castle. The two routes differ clearly: the nature trail ends in Újezdec, while the loop returns to the castle grounds. This distinction is particularly useful if you want to decide in advance whether reaching the destination or returning to the castle grounds should be the main focus of your route.

Spring Garden and the Merklínka

The garden of Ptenín Castle is also part of the character of the place. Every spring, carpets of anemones, buttercups, lesser celandine and lily of the valley cover it. This seasonal display provides a natural accent to the architecture and makes the garden an independent part of discovering Ptenín.

One station of the Naučná stezka is dedicated to the original course of the Merklínka River. The river’s original course is rich in bends and pools. Alongside the history of the castle and the village, the focus here is on the former shape of a river course.
