Horní Lukavice: Village History in a Clear Settlement Structure

Horní Lukavice is a destination for travellers who want to get to know a place through its history, landscape and everyday meeting places. Horní Lukavice is already mentioned in written records from 1216. To this day, the character of the village can be read particularly clearly in its historic centre.

The historic centre consists of rural farmsteads surrounding a small rectangular village green. The farmsteads around the village green include preserved gateway structures, which give the settlement structure a specific historical detail. There is also a late Baroque chapel on the village green, designated as an historically valuable monument. A statue of Saint John of Nepomuk stands on the main road in Horní Lukavice and is likewise designated as an historically valuable monument. These sites are not only located in different parts of the village’s history, but also show how closely religious monuments and rural settlement forms are connected.

Fortress, Vanished Villages and Historical Traces

Tiles and vessels were found at the site of the Horní Lukavice fortress.

Another trace leads to the vanished village of Lomy. It was located in the cadastral area of Horní Lukavice, west of the road, and was destroyed by Mansfeld’s troops at the beginning of the Thirty Years’ War.

The landscape west of the village also recalls former settlements. The Háj forest marks the site of a village that probably disappeared during the Hussite Wars. Those interested in local history will therefore find not just individual buildings in Horní Lukavice, but several distinct indications of earlier settlements and periods of upheaval.

Cycling Route, Watercourse and Recreation

The location of the historic centre is precisely described for orientation in the area: it lies east of road I/27, on the road to Dolní Lukavice and beside a local watercourse. The local cycling route CT 2187 also passes through Horní Lukavice. It connects Chlumčany and Letiny via Horní Lukavice, Dolní Lukavice, Krasavce, Vodomety and Řenče.

The Koupaliště Horní Lukavice is located north of Horní Lukavice on the Lukavický stream. The Koupaliště is situated behind the village and serves for recreation and relaxation.

Local Traditions and the Landscape West of the Village

Regularly organised traditional community events are also part of present-day village life. West of Horní Lukavice, the Dražky meadows lead into the U Vojtěcha forest. There stands a recently restored and consecrated wayside shrine associated with a local tradition about Saint Adalbert. This transition from meadows to forest complements the historic village centre with a landscape destination possessing its own tradition.

Very good bus connections are also among the recorded features of Horní Lukavice. In terms of planning a stay, the village thus combines historical monuments, local events, cycling, a watercourse and good transport connections, without these themes merging into a single attraction.
