Merklín: Castles, Bijadla Barn and Pond Landscape

Merklín combines a long local history with a distinctive castle complex, the historic locality of Bijadla and an extensive pond landscape. If you would like to combine culture, nature and different excursion options during your trip, you will find several clearly distinguishable themes here: medieval roots, Baroque and Neoclassical architectural history, paths by the water, and cycling and nature experiences.

Historical Traces in Merklín and Bijadla

By the time it was first mentioned in writing in 1356, Merklín was already a small town with a parish church and a fortress. The local history also includes the Church of Saint Nicholas, which was extensively rebuilt at the end of the 17th century. A Baroque rectory was built as part of this complex in 1712; the statue of Saint Florian dates from 1765.

A particular focus is Merklín’s castle complex. It comprises the castle buildings, an extensive farmyard, a park, castle cellars and a large stone barn. At the same time, it is a characteristic example of a rural feudal manor. For your trip planning, this creates a cultural center whose individual components showcase different periods and functions.

Outside Merklín lies Bijadla Barn, a Baroque barn within a farmyard. Its original Gothic fabric and later Neoclassical alterations are still visible; the building was converted from a church into a manorial barn. The former church in Bijadla, dedicated to Saint Lawrence, is first documented in writing in 1369. The Bijadla educational trail was created on the premises of a former agricultural cooperative in the historic locality of Bijadla in Merklín near Přeštice.

Pond, Hiking Trail and Nature Observation

Merklínský Pond lies southeast of Merklín and covers 35 hectares. The green-marked hiking trail 1430 runs around the pond from Roupov to Staňkov and onward. The route provides a concrete option if you would like to combine your stay with a hike through the landscape, without classifying the route by an unsupported walking time or difficulty rating.

Around Bijadla, wild animals living in outdoor enclosures can be observed, including red deer, fallow deer, mouflon, wild boar, pheasants, ducks and wild rabbits. This allows families with different levels of interest to divide their research between architectural history, paths by the water and nature observation. Cycling route CT 3 also passes through Merklín on its route from Prague to Kdyně and continues in the direction of Regensburg and Munich.

Merklín has no railway station; there is also no railway line in the immediate vicinity. By bus, you can reach Přeštice, Stod or Staňkov, where you can use train connections.
