Borovy Between Pilgrimage, Architectural Heritage and Landscape

Borovy brings together sacred history, preserved buildings and marked trails within a compact thematic area. The Chapel of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary is a late Baroque building and also the centre of the annual pilgrimage in Borovy. This makes a specific cultural site the focal point, giving your stay a historical and religious dimension without requiring you to devote your days to a single theme. The building combines architectural interest with the annual pilgrimage and offers two ways of approaching the history of the village: through its late Baroque form and through its religious tradition.

The local architectural heritage also includes two historic granaries known as Špíchary. One of these preserved granaries has been reconstructed. Together, the two buildings reveal a traditional form of agricultural architecture. Another distinctive complex is the Prokop Mill, which includes a three-storey main mill building. Next to this main building stands a two-storey flour storehouse dating from 1897. Those interested in regional history and different architectural forms will therefore find several independent points of interest in Borovy.

The culture of remembrance is also present in the village. Borovy has three memorial plaques commemorating victims of the Second World War. The plaques are visible from the road and are therefore part of the visible village landscape. This historical impression is complemented by the Borovská lípa, a 19-metre-high memorial tree in Borovy. The chapel, granaries, mill buildings, memorial plaques and tree each provide their own focus and can be mentally connected into a cultural and historical walk. The form of remembrance shifts between several plaques in the streetscape and a single 19-metre-high tree.

For active days, Borovy offers forest and farm tracks as well as marked walking trails that allow you to cross the landscape. A 12 km marked hiking route begins at Borovy railway station and leads via Mezihoří to Švihov. With the railway station as the starting point and Švihov as the destination, the route can be planned as a linear tour; Mezihoří lies along the way. The 12 kilometres provide a clear framework for planning the day, while the starting point, intermediate location and destination form a fixed sequence. For getting there, a KČT route description recommends travelling by train to Borovy railway station. This allows your arrival and the start of your hike to be combined at the same location.

Borovy is also connected to a wider cycling network. The municipality is among those crossed by the priority long-distance cycling route CT 38. The route runs from Plzeň via Klatovy, Nýrsko and Železná Ruda. This sequence of places situates Borovy within a regional cycling route that links several destinations.
