Discover Čížkov U Blovic through its architectural and local history: the parish church has Gothic origins and was later remodelled in the Baroque style; Strašná (Strážná) skála points to a medieval fortification. A historic rectory, a small-leaved lime tree over 250 years old and dated village events complete the picture.

The Parish Church and Its Architectural History

The parish church of St John the Baptist in Čížkov is documented in sources from 1384 and was originally Gothic. From 1727 to 1735, it was remodelled in the Baroque style. No medieval elements are discernible in the building as it stands today. The Gothic origin therefore refers to an earlier phase of construction, not to a medieval appearance visibly preserved today.

The rectory, dating from 1680, stands opposite the church; a small-leaved lime tree over 250 years old grows beside it. The rectory and tree add two very concrete details to the architectural history: a dated building opposite the church and an old tree right next to it. The church is occasionally open to visitors. If you plan to visit the interior, check accessibility beforehand.

Strašná (Strážná) skála: Fortification and Terrain

Strašná (Strážná) skála is a registered immovable cultural monument in the Na hrádcích area near Čížkov, in the direction of Přešín. The medieval fortification was built after the mid-13th century by the Buzic family on a buližník rock. The site of the fortification is separated from a plateau that slopes gently to the south by a ditch up to 6 m deep and up to 15 m wide. Its interpretation therefore depends both on its historical dating and on the specific relationship between the fortification site, the ditch and the terrain. These measurements are maximum values; they do not mean that the ditch is equally deep or wide throughout. Anyone interested in medieval fortifications will find not only a date but also a vivid description of the terrain.
