Oplot

Oplot combines rural cultural monuments with an open landscape of flat to gently rolling terrain. Extensive fields characterize the area, while only a small proportion of woodland can be found on the southern edge of the cadastral area. Anyone wishing to discover the Czech Republic away from major cities will encounter a concise local history, small religious monuments, and a regional cycle route that connects Oplot with several other places.

The Chapel of the Virgin Mary and Its History

The Chapel of the Virgin Mary is at the heart of the local cultural history. Construction began in 1862 and was completed in 1863; the ceremonial consecration took place on October 4, 1863. The chapel is registered as an immovable cultural monument under number 32622 / 4-260. Oplot therefore has a clearly documented historical focal point whose significance derives not only from its age but also from its preserved architectural design.

The building is a rectangular structure from the second half of the 19th century. The presbytery has a three-sided termination, while a Neo-Romanesque triangular gable and a small turret define the exterior appearance above it. In 2008, the chapel was renovated inside; the altar was restored and the pews were cleaned. There is also a commemorative cross from the late 19th century in front of the chapel.

Village Square and Small Religious Monuments

The village square is also one of the places where Oplot’s history is immediately apparent. A niche chapel with a statue of St. John of Nepomuk from the second half of the 19th century stands there. The village scene is complemented by a column-shaped wayside shrine with a tiered shaft, located along a road in Oplot. Such individual structures and artworks provide the village with several small, clearly distinguishable points of interest, rather than concentrating sightseeing on a single building.

Cycle Route 2185 and the Landscape

For active exploration, regional cycle route No. 2185 is of particular importance: It runs through Oplot and leads via Přeštice, Oplot, Soběkury, Otěšice, Ptenín, and Křenice. The route thus establishes a specific regional connection. Oplot can be included in a tour connecting several places, while the immediate landscape is characterized by its predominantly flat to gently rolling form and the high proportion of fields. The small amount of woodland on the southern edge of the cadastral area represents a distinct landscape aspect.

Pilgrimage as a Living Tradition

A religious tradition is also part of the local experience alongside the buildings. During the annual pilgrimage held at the local chapel in Oplot, a mass takes place.
