Vrčeň – Forest Trails, Štědrý and Local Traditions

Vrčeň combines a forested landscape with educational trails, historic buildings and recurring local events. This gives the village several ways to experience a stay in the Czech Republic: outdoor activities, cultural and historical discoveries, and insights into regional traditions are all closely connected thematically.

Forest Landscape and Trails on Štědrý

Vrčeň lies in a hollow enclosed by surrounding forests. The area offers opportunities for hiking and cycling trips. A prominent landmark is Štědrý, which rises to 668 metres. The municipality describes it as the last spur of the Brdy Mountains. Two tourist routes with information boards lead through the wooded landscape around Štědrý.

The Štědrý Educational Trail is particularly informative. The trail leads from Opatský Pond in Vrčeň to Štědrý and has seven stops with educational information. The route thus connects the landscape with explanatory content, without requiring the mountain to be viewed merely as a vantage point.

Another option is the Trail of Saint Adalbert. It begins at Vyšehrad and leads through the Štědrý forest along part of the trail marked in green. Five information boards provide visitors with basic information about the saint, who is connected with Vrčeň according to legend. The route ends near the Baroque Chapel of Saint Adalbert and the Dobrá voda spring.

Chapel, Church and Historic Monuments

The Chapel of Saint Adalbert lies approximately 1.5 km northeast of Vrčeň on the slope of Chlumec Forest, north of Road II/191 towards Rožmitál pod Třemšínem. A branch of the green-marked hiking route leads to it from the road. The building is an early Baroque octagonal central-plan structure. Its connection with the Trail of Saint Adalbert makes the chapel a cultural destination along the routes described here. It became a destination for many pilgrims and a stopping place for processions.

Above the village centre stands the Church of Saint Lawrence in a prominent position. It is a single-nave building with a two-storey tower at the western end. The protected monument comprises the Church of Saint Lawrence and the grounds of the former cemetery. The village landscape also includes the statue of Saint John of Nepomuk opposite the inn on the village square and the statue of the Virgin Mary by the fire station, both valuable historic and artistic monuments of Vrčeň.

Traditions and Events in Vrčeň

The Vojtěšská pilgrimage is a long-standing tradition in Vrčeň. The New Year's ascent of Štědrý is also established as a traditional annual hiking excursion. Those who would like to experience other forms of local events in addition to walking can attend the Vrčeňská kuličkiáda, a recurring marble competition with four competition categories.

The Vrčeň Beer Festival reached its third edition in 2026 and offered tastings of various types of beer. Vrčeňské šplouchání features or showcases a variety of creatively made watercraft. The recurring Memoriál Jana Chodory firefighting sports competition adds a sporting event to this range of activities. Vrčeň therefore showcases not only trails and buildings, but also traditions, competitions and festivals with different focuses.
