Štěnovice – Castle, Cultural Monuments and Landscape

Štěnovice combines the river landscape of the Úhlava with several historic sites. The Baroque castle on the left bank of the Úhlava, a Jewish cemetery on the southern slope, a protected road bridge and paths through the landscape give the place several distinct facets. Štěnovice Castle and the History of the Estate

Štěnovice Baroque Castle is located on the left bank of the Úhlava. The year 1723 is displayed on the entrance portal – a specific detail that directly reflects the historic character of the building. The ground floor houses an exhibition of historical photographs of the Štěnovice estate. The former estate is protected as a cultural monument and has a historical connection with the adjacent castle grounds. This connection makes the castle area particularly interesting if you want to consider not just a single building, but the historical setting of a former estate complex.

The castle is occasionally opened for guided tours by its private owner. The checked local information does not specify a fixed general visiting time. A red-marked hiking trail also runs around the castle. This allows you to combine a visit to the grounds with a stretch of trail without implying that the castle has a permanently accessible function.

Church of St. Procopius and the Jewish Cemetery

The Church of St. Procopius is incorporated into a house with an extensive renovated garden. Since 2008, this site has occasionally been opened each year for concerts, exhibitions, children's events and religious gatherings, not only for services. For families, the documented connection between the cultural programme and children's events may be a particularly interesting point of reference; this does not imply any specific dates.

The church's ecclesiastical affiliation dates from the mid-18th century. At that time, Spanish monks of the Trinitarian order lived there for three decades in a newly founded small monastery. The Jewish cemetery adds a different chapter to these historical traces of the place: it was established on 1 August 1795 and lies on a southern slope above the Losinský potok stream. The grounds contain 164 gravestones with Hebrew, German and Czech inscriptions.

The Jewish cemetery is locked, has been listed as a cultural monument since 2016 and can be visited by prior arrangement. For your planning, the special visiting arrangement is therefore crucial: it is not one of the places you can simply enter without prior agreement.

Bridge, Statue and Visible Local History

The Štěnovice road bridge is a straight girder bridge made of reinforced concrete over the Úhlava. It was built in 1905 by the company Müller & Kapsa and is protected as a cultural monument. The statue of Saint John of Nepomuk has also been returned to its pedestal in Plzeňská Street near the bridge. It was created by the academic sculptors and AVU graduates, the Šmíd couple. The bridge and statue thus show two different forms of public local history: a historic transport connection and a religiously inspired work of art in the streetscape.

Quarry and Views of the Surroundings

The small Lom Štěnovice quarry lies on the outskirts, a place closely connected with nature. There is a small car park there; from the car park, it is approximately 200 metres to the quarry. In the surrounding area, a forest path leads to the Komárov viewpoint, which offers a view of the surrounding landscape.
