Plzeň-Sever District

The Plzeň-Sever District is an interesting choice for a trip that combines culture, cycling, landscapes and water-based experiences. The Baroque sites around Plasy and Manětín, several cycling routes of varying difficulty, and the Hracholusky Reservoir are particularly characteristic of the area.

Baroque culture between Plasy and Mariánská Týnice

Plasy Monastery underwent extensive Baroque reconstruction between 1661 and 1785. It is designated as a National Cultural Monument and has been awarded the European Heritage designation. A special tour focuses on the monastery’s historic water system. Plasy is also home to the Centre for Building Culture, which presents the history of building techniques and construction materials. Manětín Chateau and its park are designated as a National Cultural Monument. The park is designed as an English landscape garden and includes a pond, a hermitage and a pavilion. Several hiking and cycling routes can be found in Manětínská Nature Park. The natural area is largely covered by a continuous forest complex with native tree species and a valuable herb layer. Mariánská Týnice was a former pilgrimage site and a Cistercian provostry connected with Plasy Monastery. Since 2018, the complex has been one of the national cultural monuments of the Czech Republic. The pilgrimage church was built according to plans by Jan Blažej Santini-Aichel on a Greek-cross floor plan and is crowned by a central dome. Mariánská Týnice is considered the highlight of the Baroko I cycling route. The Museum and Gallery of the Northern Pilsen Region present exhibitions on the history of the region; they have been associated with Mariánská Týnice as a location since 1952.

Cycling routes with varying profiles

Three Baroque cycling routes start in Plasy. The routes in the northern Pilsen region have different levels of difficulty and follow marked cycling paths of the Club of Czech Tourists bearing the West Bohemian Baroque logo. The Baroko I route passes the Baroque estates of Kalec and Sechutice. The Baroko III route runs through Baroque avenues and wild forests, including to Kaceřov. Ten Baroque rest areas offer views of important monuments. Another option is the 49.4-kilometre Postřelím cycling tour, which is suitable for trekking bikes or mountain bikes. It starts at Žihle railway station on the Plzeň–Žatec railway line. Rabštejn lies along the route and is characterised by a castle, a chateau, wooden houses, an inn and a church. The Pňovany Bridge is also one of the region’s prominent landmarks: it was completed in 1901 and can be crossed by pedestrians and cyclists.

Lakes, reservoir and short excursions

Boat trips are available on the Hracholusky Reservoir. Departures from Transkemp Hracholusky stop at several points around the reservoir; water skiing is also possible there. Hracholusky therefore offers a separate focus for days spent by the water. Odlezelské Lake can be reached by car or on foot from nearby Odlezly. At Hromnické Lake, a viewpoint is located approximately 100 metres away; the lake can also be circumnavigated. These two destinations complement the longer cycling routes with shorter excursions focused clearly on the landscape.
