Nekmíř

Nekmíř can be explored through its tangible history and varied landscape. A notable memorial site is the Jan Žižka Battle Memorial. It was unveiled on July 28, 2017, and commemorates the 1419 battle in which Jan Žižka first used wagons as fortifications. The Žižka Memorial is freely accessible year-round and can be reached via a field path between Nekmíř’s new development and the village.

For the historical context of Nekmíř, it is also important that the history of the village is associated with the first documented mention of the use of wagons as fortifications in the Bohemian region. This was an improvisation, not yet the use of classic heavy war wagons. However, the history is not limited to this memorial site. The Chapel of Saint Anne stands in the center of Nekmíř and dates from the 19th century. Nekmíř is also home to a statue of Saint John of Nepomuk from the second quarter of the 18th century. The memorial site unveiled in 2017 differs chronologically from the older monuments in the village: the chapel dates from the 19th century, while the statue dates from the second quarter of the 18th century.

The Nekmíř Castle complex also leads back to an older period. The monumental central palace of the medieval fortress corresponds to the north wing of this castle complex. Those interested in the development of fortifications and representative architecture will therefore find different historical references within the village: from the medieval core of the building through the Baroque statue to the 19th-century chapel and the more recent memorial site.

Forests, Nature Reserve and Cycling Route

Nekmíř lies in the geomorphological area of Plaská pahorkatina, which forms the central part of the Plzeňská pahorkatina. The landscape around Nekmíř is predominantly characterized by mixed forests; pine dominates among the coniferous trees. The natural area includes the Bažantnice Nature Reserve. It comprises a valuable mixed-forest complex with rich herbaceous undergrowth and a stream floodplain landscape. Northwest of Nekmíř, plot no. 1381/1 lies on the boundary of the Bažantnice Nature Reserve and partly extends into it.

A marked local cycling route runs through Nekmíř. During a walk in the forest, you may also come across pits that recall the short-lived coal mining carried out in the 19th century. Alongside the historic buildings and memorial sites, there are therefore two distinct landscape experiences: a route that passes through the village and visible traces of former use of the forest.
