Dražeň: Educational Trail, Natural Monument and Historical Traces

Dražeň combines remarkable cultural traces with protected nature and an educational trail that explores the surrounding area as part of a longer hiking route. This makes it a destination where a look at historical details can be combined with experiences in the landscape and archaeological themes.

Culture and History in Dražeň

A prominent focal point of local culture is the Chapel of the Holy Family. Its regular octagonal ground plan makes it interesting simply because of its shape. The chapel also bears a chronogram from 1720 in the inscription above the entrance. This historical detail provides the building with a clearly dated trace and complements its rather architectural impression with a written reference to the past.

The stone cross of Dražeň also has a clearly describable location: it stands about 1 kilometre from the village, on the left side of the road to Pláň. A cast-iron cross was subsequently attached to its upper side. Those who pay attention to small monuments and visible changes to historic objects while exploring will find here a single destination with a distinctive structural addition.

The Osojno hilltop settlement offers another historical dimension. It lies on a rocky cliff west of the Osojno farmstead and is classified in the Dražeň cadastral area as a Category UAN I archaeological site and as an important archaeological locality. The site therefore represents not only today’s landscape but also a documented settlement trace in an elevated location.

In the Malenice area east of Dražeň, a 200–300-metre-long mining adit also recalls the region’s industrial history. Iron sulphate was leached there in the 19th century; the adit was used by the Stark-David company to produce sulphuric acid. This history adds a theme to the excursion that extends beyond religious buildings and observing nature.

Protected Nature and the Malenický pramen Spring

Osojno near Dražeň is also associated with a protected natural monument. It protects a remnant of a natural thermophilous woodland with typical woodland flora and a species-rich spring bloom. This contrast between an archaeological locality and a natural habitat is precisely what gives Osojno two clearly different perspectives.

The Malenický pramen spring has been officially protected under Regulation 5/2010 of the Plzeň Region. It emerges from shale bedrock in the valley of the Dražeňský potok stream. Precipitated salts form interesting, separate terraced pools there. The spring near Dražeň can be reached via the green-marked Plasy–Dolní Bělá hiking trail.

Educational Trail between Plasy and Dolní Bělá

The Ludvík Očenášek Educational Trail runs for 13 kilometres between Plasy and Dolní Bělá. It is marked in green and accessible year-round. Along the educational trail, Dražeň is one of the nearby places to stop for refreshments.
