Lipno – Hracholuský Reservoir and Historical Discoveries

The Hracholuský Reservoir stretches for 22 km along the Mže River between Stříbro and Pilsen. This extent shapes the character of the surrounding area. A special way to get to know the waterscape is offered by the Josef Švamberk excursion boat. It operates regularly on the Hracholuský Reservoir from June to the end of September. For your travel planning, the seasonal timing of the boat trip is therefore particularly relevant.

A specific point of contact is the Hracholusky Tourist Information Centre. It is located at Kemp Keramika, Lipno 357, Líšťany. In the wider surroundings of Lipno, fishing is also permitted continuously in the Hracholuský Reservoir in the Mže 4 fishing area (number 431 028). Thus, in addition to sightseeing cruises, the documented range of activities in the area also includes quieter ways to enjoy the water.

Circular Trail and Modern Art by the Lake

The 31.6 km Hracholusky Circular Trail runs along the southern shore of the reservoir to Lipno. Its length makes it an independent excursion for anyone who wants to experience the landscape from more than a single viewpoint. The trail also connects Lipno with a unique group of statues of Roman soldiers at the reservoir. This is a modern art installation commemorating the history of Roman trade routes to Bohemia.

In this way, the circular trail brings together the natural setting and the cultural theme without suggesting that the two impressions describe the same destination.

Archaeological Traces and Earlier Local History

In 1316, the town was called Bohosud z Lipna. The Baroque chateau in Lipno is also part of the town’s history. It once included a chapel dedicated to Saint Anne, which was consecrated in 1715. The word “once” is crucial here: the chapel is documented as a historical part of the chateau.

A particularly concrete archaeological reference lies south of the town. The important Staré Lipno archaeological site is located 1.75 km south of Lipno and contains settlement phases from the Late Bronze Age, the Early Middle Ages and the transition from the Early to the High Middle Ages. The site of the Staré Lipno hillfort is protected by a high triple stone transverse rampart. Double to triple fortifications have also survived on its western side.

The late-medieval Buben castle ruin is also located in the vicinity of Lipno, at the confluence of the Úlický stream and the Mže River. Together with Staré Lipno and the town’s history, this creates a historical focus encompassing various periods: from the settlement phases of the archaeological site and the medieval castle ruin to the Baroque past of the chateau.
