Bezvěrov – Glass History, Boundary Stones and Starry Skies

Glass History and Industrial Heritage

The Kavalier Glassworks in Bezvěrov was founded in 1867 by Czech entrepreneur Eduard Kavalier. It produced hollow glass, crystal glass, chemical glass and, above all, laboratory glass, which was also valued overseas. Operations ended in 1923. The former Kavalier Glassworks include a group of residential buildings and factory buildings classified as industrial heritage. Thus, Bezvěrov is not only about glass production, but also about the surviving architectural legacy of this former operation.

Boundary Stones and Local History

A second historical highlight lies in the cadastral area of Bezvěrov. Eight surviving sandstone boundary stones from a historical boundary system dating back to 1686 are preserved there. Due to the extent of their preservation, the ensemble of boundary stones is considered an exceptional example of marking property boundaries in the 17th century and an important record of historical development.

The Chapel of Saint Florian is also part of the local history. It dates from the second half of the 19th century and has a bell that is still in use today. Another religious connection leads to Krašov: Every year on 30 November, the feast of Saint Andrew, a pilgrimage Mass with Trappist brothers is held in the Church of Saint Andrew.

Hiking from Bezvěrov

For active days, the Bezvěrov–Vlkošov–Zbraslavský vrch–Kozelka–Doubravice–Nečtiny hiking route begins in Bezvěrov and is 17.5 km long. It initially follows the red-marked trail northeast to Služetín, 3 km away. The total length and the first section provide two clear points of reference for your own planning, without confusing the rest of the route with its opening section.

Manětín Dark Sky Region

The Manětín Dark Sky Region, which includes Bezvěrov, offers a different perspective. It covers 346 km² and provides a relatively well-preserved nocturnal environment as well as a star-filled sky. Bezvěrov is one of ten municipalities in this region. It is easily accessible to visitors; for reasons of nature conservation, there are no movement restrictions there. Alongside culture and hiking, you can therefore also consider the nocturnal landscape as a distinct focus of your trip.
