Lochousice – Village Square, History and Equestrian Sports

Lochousice combines a distinctive village square with a long history, visible rural architecture and activities related to equestrian sports. The village lies 6.5 km northwest of Stod in flat to gently sloping terrain. This gives it a clearly recognizable village character in which culture, landscape and local traditions exist closely side by side.

Chapel and Farmsteads on the Village Square

The large masonry Chapel of St. Florian stands in the center of the village square. It dates from 1847 and has a rectangular nave and a projecting two-storey tower. The chapel and its enclosed grounds are protected. Its location makes it a defining landmark within the village, while Lochousice still retains its rural scale.

The village square is lined with numerous masonry farmsteads in the late Classicist style. To this day, many of these buildings retain mostly their gateways, masonry granaries or elaborately decorated façades of the residential buildings. Barns also stand on the outskirts of the village; others are located at the rear of the farmyards, away from the other buildings. The historical structure is therefore evident not only in a single building, but in the arrangement of the entire village landscape.

Ponds, Stream and Early Village History

The Touškovský stream flows through Lochousice. Two ponds lie directly on the village square along the Touškovský stream, complementing the scene of water, buildings and public space. The surroundings are therefore characterized less by dramatic changes in elevation than by the tranquil sequence of the village square, stream, ponds and gently undulating terrain.

The history of the village also reaches far back. The settlement area of Lochousice was already inhabited in prehistoric times, as numerous archaeological finds demonstrate. Lochousice is first mentioned in 1186. Historically, the village was owned by Kladruby Monastery. Those interested in the development of villages will therefore find several layers of time here: early settlement, medieval records and a village landscape from the 19th century that remains legible to this day.

Equestrian Sports and Local Activities

A special way to get to know the village beyond its architectural history is offered by Jezdecký spolek Lochousice. The club is dedicated to both recreational and competitive equestrian sports and welcomes newcomers interested in the sport. The “Hubertova jízda” also takes place in Lochousice almost every year. This event is one of the recurring local traditions and adds a distinct accent alongside the village architecture.

The Lochousice multi-purpose sports field is available for sports and recreation. It was built in 2023 through the reconstruction of a former tennis court and is intended to serve the general public for sports and recreation. Important for practical use: The sports field is locked most of the time; borrowing the keys must be arranged in advance by telephone or in person. It therefore differs from freely accessible areas of the village and should be taken into account separately when planning to use it.
