Kbelany – Village History, Cycling Route and Harabaska

Kbelany combines an illustrative village history with a regional cycling route and nearby countryside bearing traces of its own. The village was first mentioned in documents in 1239. A hexagonal chapel with a Sanktus bell turret at its top stands on the village square, while the nearby area is home to Harabaska, a 502-metre-high wooded hill. The history of Kbelany is closely linked to the Benedictines of Kladruby: Kbelany belonged to them until the second half of the 18th century. Twenty-three farmsteads are recorded for this period. This figure makes the village’s historical development more tangible without equating present-day conditions with the settlement structure of that time.

A prominent historical feature in the village is the hexagonal chapel on the village square. Its Sanktus bell turret at the top gives the building a distinctive external detail. A wayside shrine, probably built in the mid-18th century, also stands on the road to Rochlov. Together with the sandstone cross in Kbelany, it forms a cultural landscape shaped by more than just a single building. The cross dates back to the Middle Ages and is considered a rare surviving example of the historical marking of boundaries between individual properties.

Cycling on Route 2204

For cyclists, regional cycling route 2204 passes through the cadastral area of Kbelany. It follows existing local roads, service roads and field tracks from Rochlov towards Sulislav. Kbelany is therefore connected to a specific regional route whose course includes various types of paths. Harabaska: A Wooded Hill with Historical Traces

Harabaska is located about 2 kilometres from Kbelany. The 502-metre-high wooded hill is one of the hiking destinations in the vicinity of Kbelany. The area around Harabaska was formerly a military training ground. Near Harabaska, visitors may come across overgrown remains of old trenches and abandoned underground shelters.
