Nečtiny – Preitenstein Castle, Museum and Mlýnská Trail

Museum, Chateau and Castle Ruins

At the Regional Museum Nečtiny, the exhibition Četnická stanice tells the story of the former gendarmerie station in Nečtiny, which was one of the twelve gendarmerie stations in the Kralovice political district. The exhibition Lesnictví a dřevařství focuses on the importance of forests as a source of livelihood and as a source of raw materials for glassworks and other businesses. A log cabin room also houses Národopis Nečtinska, which presents part of the history of the Nečtiny region. The museum thus offers a perspective ranging from a former gendarmerie station through forests and industry to the history of the Nečtiny region.

Nečtiny Chateau is a Neo-Gothic complex opposite Preitenstein Castle. Its U-shaped floor plan and wings of different lengths enclose a courtyard of honour. Preitenštein Castle (Breitenstein) was built on a hill as a large castle as early as before 1333. The outer walls of the castle and palace, as well as a passage leading down into the cellars, have survived from the ruins of Preitenstein Castle. The ruins are designated as an important archaeological site.

The Church of St. Anne in Nečtiny also combines several historical layers: it was built in 1450–1462, destroyed during the Thirty Years' War and rebuilt by Václav Adam Kokořovec in 1655–1657. The single-nave interior has a flat ceiling, a semicircular triumphal arch, a broad chancel and a sacristy with a burial site. The sequence of construction, destruction and reconstruction is itself part of the town's architectural history.

Mlýnská Trail and Landscape

The Mlýnská Trail connects Nečtiny with Manětín. It passes through beautiful countryside along the Starý potok; its central theme is mills and the power of water. Below Preitenštein Castle in Nečtiny are basalt columns that may be among the longest in Bohemia. For trip planning, this provides not only the buildings but also a clearly defined route with a landscape and thematic focus: waterways, the subject of mills and the landscape belong together here. Below the castle, a geological feature complements the historic complex.
