Discover Kaznějov: Nature Trails, Kaolin Landscape and Cycling Routes
Kaznějov combines a landscape surrounded by forests with nature trails, cycling routes and the distinctive history of kaolin. Most of the town lies in a basin, allowing different types of excursions to be combined when choosing your destination: a longer circular route with several stops, a shortened route option, a cycling tour or an excursion to a viewpoint.
Nature Trails with Different Themes
The Naučná stezka Kaznějov nature trail is 14 km long and leads to eight stops at significant locations, mostly within the town's cadastral area. This gives the route several points of interest for a longer day of hiking. A shortened, 7 km variant omits the turnoff to a viewpoint above the open-cast kaolin mine. These two route lengths make the desired tour length a clear decision before you plan your excursion.
The themes of the long nature trail also include the valley of the Kaznějovský potok: one stop specifically provides information about this valley. There is also the local tourist nature trail Místní naučný turistický okruh Kaznějov with three information boards. This circular route also includes a covered outdoor seating area next to the Kaznějov railway station building. Those wishing to combine different interests within a travel group can therefore choose between a more detailed nature trail and a shorter local information route.
Kaolin Landscape and Viewpoint
In the surrounding area, Kaolinka Kaznějov is classified as a geotourism attraction and geosite. The Kaznějov open-cast kaolin mine itself is not open to the public. A different view of this landscape feature is offered by a viewpoint on the road between Kaznějov and Mrtník; from there, there is a view of the Kaznějov open-cast kaolin mine. It is therefore important to distinguish between the mine, which is not open to the public, and the viewpoint that provides a view of it. The shortened nature trail variant specifically does not take the turnoff to this viewpoint.
Cycling Routes, Water and Traditional Events
Kaznějov is also a clear starting point for planning a cycling route: local cycle route 2304 runs through Kaznějov and is connected to the higher-level cycle routes 35 and 352. For a stay with different ideas for each day, the cycle route can therefore be considered a separate focus alongside the nature trails, without combining the two means of travel into a single route.
Kaznějov also has the swimming facility or retention basin known as “koupaliště Kaznějov”. There are also traditional events with a local connection. The Kaznějovský Doběh is a traditional amateur run for all age groups. The Kynologický klub Kaznějov traditionally organizes a spring hiking march in the surroundings of Kaznějov for the public.
The Town's Historical Context
Kaznějov was first mentioned in writing in connection with the founding of the Cistercian monastery in Plasy in the mid-12th century. This historical connection adds a temporal dimension to today's routes and landscape themes. Another historical reference is the inline railway in Kaznějov: it ran from the former ice stadium to the outdoor swimming pool on the left bank of the Kaznějovský potok. This wording describes a former route and should not be understood as referring to current operation.
