Discover Úněšov

Úněšov combines a distinctive village church, Baroque minor monuments, archaeological traces and a landscape on the edge of the Manětínská Nature Park. Church and Historical Heritage

The defining landmark of Úněšov is the single-nave Church of Saint Procopius. Its rectangular nave, narrower five-sided chancel with buttresses and tower on the north side give the building its unmistakable form. The church was originally Gothic; in 1738–1739 it acquired its present Baroque appearance. The church grounds are also an archaeological site. Finds dating from the Middle Ages to the modern era have been documented there or are well-founded assumptions.

The historic centre of the village also includes the Baroque vicarage. Together with the church and the former school, it forms an urban ensemble. Behind Úněšov, on the road to Číhaná, stands a Late Baroque chapel. In the village square, you can see a sandstone statue of the Immaculate Virgin Mary on a pedestal. The Baroque sculpture dates from the 18th century and was probably created by a local master.

Another distinctive monument is the life-size Baroque statue of Saint John of Nepomuk, dating from 1704. It stands on a low prismatic pedestal decorated with stylised sunflower blossoms; the artist is unknown. The fragmentarily preserved wayside shrine is a high-quality example of rural stonework from the early 17th century. The historic picture is completed by the Pichl farmyard, a complex consisting of several buildings, open to the east and arranged on a U-shaped plan.

Landscape, Cycling and Discoveries

The natural landscape character of Úněšov lies on the edge of the Manětínská Nature Park. This natural setting complements the village’s built and monumental heritage. For cyclists, the completed Číhaná–Úněšov–Podmokly cycle path is one of the area’s concrete recent developments: construction began in 2023 and was completed in 2024. The path safely connects Číhaná with Úněšov and provides safe access to the football pitch.

The historically shaped region extends beyond Úněšov as well. The 48-kilometre Šipín cycle route passes through the historic area around Konstantinovy Lázně and Gutštejn Castle. Úněšov itself is also home to an extensive castle-ruin site with well-preserved remains of a terrain fortification, but no clear traces of buildings. It is precisely this contrast between a recognisable fortification and the absence of clearly identifiable building remains that makes the site interesting to anyone who wants to view history not only through fully preserved structures.
