Opava District
Opava District combines lowland river plains, forests, mineral resources, manor houses, religious buildings and technical monuments. This creates very different kinds of holiday days: you can explore castle parks and historical exhibitions, travel along marked routes, choose cycling routes between Opava and the Kružberk Reservoir, or swim and go for walks at Stříbrné jezero. When looking for suitable accommodation, the key question is whether your trip will focus more on culture, cycling, nature observation or a combination of these themes.
Castles, Parks and Regional Culture
The castle park at Hradec nad Moravicí covers around 130 hectares. From its viewpoints, you can look out over the Moravice Valley and the castle; the park includes Beethovenův vrch, Lisztovo návrší and Bezručova vyhlídka, among others. The castle complex also provides access to the park, the viewpoints, the courtyard of the White Castle and an introductory historical exhibition. This allows you to combine landscape and culture during a visit without limiting yourself to just one attraction.
Raduň Castle also has its own particular focus: a visitor route leads through private aristocratic salons and a large guest attic. Documented cultural guests of Hradec Castle include Ludwig van Beethoven and Franz Liszt. In Opava, the history of museums dates back to a grammar-school museum opened in 1814; the Silesian Museum continues this historical tradition. The Church of the Holy Spirit in Opava is part of a large Minorite complex.
At the Nový Dvůr Arboretum in Stěbořice, around 7,000 species, varieties, cultivars and garden forms of plants, trees and herbs are displayed. The rhododendron collection is considered one of the richest collections in the Czech Republic. An exhibition in the arboretum’s castle tells the story of Quido Riedl, his family and the history of the arboretum.
Cycle Paths, Educational Trails and Water
The region offers several clearly distinct routes for cycling trips. The 90-kilometre Opava-Radegast-CykloTrack runs through Stěbořice, Nový Dvůr, Hradec nad Moravicí, Raduň and Kravaře. The Slezská magistrála runs from Jeseník via Rejvíz and Opava to Kravaře, continues towards Hlučín and is 111 kilometres long in total. Cycle Route 551 Moravice connects Opava with the Kružberk Reservoir over approximately 44 kilometres and highlights the reservoir and Hradec nad Moravicí Castle as notable points.
A historical element is provided by the Raduň–Jakubčovice educational trail. It commemorates the crash of an American bomber on 22 August 1944 and has three information panels. The blue-marked hiking trail 2228 connects Nové Sedlice, Přerovec, Podvihov, the Raduňka Valley, Kopanina and Bohučovice. The Hvozdnice educational trail can be reached from Slavkov, Hertice, Otice and Uhlířov and enables visitors to compare floodplain and coniferous forest ecosystems.
A day by the water can also be part of your possible travel itinerary. You can reach Stříbrné jezero on foot via Opava’s Městské sady or by taking bus 213 to the Kateřinky–Stříbrné jezero stop. On site, you can swim, use the neighbouring disc golf and beach volleyball courts, or go for a walk. According to its own description, the Opavské Slezsko regional product brand refers to the criteria of tradition, quality, regional origin and craftsmanship for products, experiences and services.
