Discover Otice: Nature, Culture and Cabbage-Growing Tradition

Otice combines an unusual natural monument with cultural monuments, an informative educational trail and a regional tradition dating back to the 19th century. Those who choose the town for a trip to the Czech Republic can therefore discover a variety of facets: geological features, small historic religious buildings, landscapes in the surrounding area and a festival at which the importance of cabbage growing remains visible to this day.

Otická sopka: Volcanic Relic and Protected Natural Monument

The most prominent natural feature is Otická sopka. The protected natural monument lies in the cadastral territories of Otice and Slavkov u Opavy and covers 10.44 hectares. Tertiary basalt outcrops and glacial deposits are protected here. Two geological phenomena from different geological eras therefore meet at this site.

Otická sopka is the remnant of a volcano from the Lower Miocene. Basalt is exposed in a quarry below the summit. This combination of volcanic origin, visible rock and protected landscape makes the site a concrete destination for anyone who plans their trip not only around place names, but also around the formation of the landscape.

Cultural Monuments in the Town

Otice itself also offers cultural points of interest. The Chapel of the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary in the centre of Otice is a cultural monument. A second chapel is located in the Rybníčky district: the Chapel of the Holy Trinity is also designated as a cultural monument. Both religious buildings complement the natural surroundings with a small-scale local history and give a stay a cultural dimension, without reducing Otice to a single attraction.

Hvozdnice Educational Trail and Protected Landscape

The Hvozdnice educational trail, accessible from Otice, is a good way to explore the landscape. It has 15 information boards, each featuring a map of the route. This means that the journey itself is not the only focus; the boards also provide an understandable context for the route.

In the wider surroundings of Otice, the protected Hvozdnice area includes three ponds, a wetland and pools inhabited by amphibians and birds. The bodies of water and habitats here differ markedly from the basalt relic of Otická sopka.

Cabbage-Growing Tradition and Regional Specialities

Otice gains a distinctive local character from its sauerkraut production. A tradition of cabbage growing has existed here since 1886; ZP Otice continues this tradition. It is particularly vividly showcased at the Otické zelné slavnosti. The festival has been held since 2011 and regularly takes place on the second Saturday in September.

The Otické zelné slavnosti include a market featuring regional products. Visitors can sample traditional local dishes there, such as cabbage soup, duck with dumplings and cabbage, as well as homemade cakes. Regional beers are also part of the culinary offering. The festival thus provides a travel occasion of its own, combining the landscape, local identity and regional cuisine.
