Mikolajice – Chapels, Equestrian Tradition and Cycling

Mikolajice combines tangible historical traces with regional traditions and a cycling tour. Between chapels along the village roads, memorials and the surviving references to the former Štáblovice fief, it offers a destination for anyone who wants not merely to see a place, but to discover its history step by step.

Historical Traces in and Around Mikolajice

The history of the village reaches far back in medieval sources. Mikolajice is mentioned for the first time in a fief book of the Bishop of Olomouc under the Latin form “Niclouicz”. For the year 1389, the book names Ota Stoš of Bránice as the owner of two parts of Mikolajice. At that time, these parts were a fief of the Bishop of Olomouc in the Osoblaha district. From 1408, Mikolajice belonged to the Štáblovice fief, which was administered at that time by Jan z Liptáně.

Several smaller structures and memorials make this past visible in the village landscape. The Chapel of Saint Florian is an architectural landmark of Mikolajice; it is accompanied by a cross dating from 1892. The Chapel of Saint Anne stands on road III/44339. Also on this road, at the northern edge of the built-up area, there is a chapel for fallen soldiers, listed as a monument of local significance.

At the eastern boundary of Mikolajice, a cross dating from 1886 stands on road II/443. A wayside shrine is located at the eastern edge of the built-up area, also on road II/443. Anyone who includes such small testimonies in their exploration of the village will find not one major concentration of sights, but a series of specific stops along the roads.

Traditions with Horses and Regional Character

The event traditions also give Mikolajice its own distinctive character. The Vodění medvěda procession passed through the village in both 2022 and 2026; for 2026, 14 February was given as the event date. At the traditional 27th Selská Hubertova jízda, riders with horses are just as welcome as participants with horse-drawn carriages. Spectators can be taken along on horseback during this event.

Cycling and Historical Landscape References

For active days, the “Zabytki techniki” cycling tour is a good choice. It is 55 km long, is considered an easy route and runs through Dolní Životice, Mikolajice and Štáblovice.

In the 1660s, the Štáblovice fief and Mikolajice together included a total of ten ponds, a developed stone sheepfold and a hop garden. The ten ponds formed water surfaces; the sheepfold and hop garden point to animal husbandry and cultivation in the surrounding area at that time.
