Stěbořice: Romanesque Traces, Nature and Discoveries

Stěbořice brings together unusually diverse discoveries: sacred history and archaeology meet thematic plant collections, an interactive trail and a lookout point connected with regional fortifications. This creates a destination where you can combine visits to cultural and historical sites, nature observation and family-friendly discoveries, without all the experiences following the same theme.

Romanesque Traces and Visible Archaeology

A notable cultural and historical landmark is the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary. Well-preserved remains of a Romanesque presbytery dating from the first half of the 13th century were uncovered beneath its floor. The church is one of the few surviving Romanesque monuments in the Moravian-Silesian Region. As a building, it is a single-nave ecclesiastical complex with a two-storey Baroque rectory in the centre of Stěbořice.

Another historical trace leads to Háj, slovanský mohylník. The site is designated in Stěbořice as an important archaeological location. Forty-three burial mounds were examined in the Slavic barrow cemetery; today, the burial mounds are visible in the landscape. As a result, the archaeological history is not limited to a description but can also be perceived in the surrounding landscape.

Arboretum and the Beránkova Trail

At the Nový Dvůr Arboretum, you can explore thematically designed plant areas featuring North American forests and prairies, Siberia, a Japanese garden and plants from the Himalayas. The different areas make a visit a journey through several vegetation zones. The arboretum also regularly hosts exhibitions. The exhibition “Quido. The Story of the Arboretum in Nový Dvůr” presents Quido Riedel, the development of the arboretum and the history of the château.

The Beránkova Trail complements this botanical focus with nature education and physical activity. The trail is approximately 2 km long and, through interactive information panels, provides information about the local fauna and flora, waste decomposition and how an anthill works. For families with pushchairs, it is important to note that the route is accessible with a pushchair, preferably an all-terrain model. However, some sections may be more difficult to walk or navigate depending on the weather.

Views, Fortification History and a Planet

The Šibenice Lookout Tower offers views of the surrounding area and information about the construction of Šibenice Fortress and the local fortifications. Access is also described in specific terms: by car, you can get to within approximately 150 m of the lookout tower; parking is available on a paved area. At the Šibenice Lookout Tower, you can also visit a pioneer shelter from the 1970s.

Another unusual stop is located on the Planetary Trail. A station featuring the planet Neptune stands in front of the cultural centre in Stěbořice. It complements the historical and natural-history themes with an astronomical element and provides an independent reason to explore the area attentively.

Another Cultural Trace

The grounds of Stěbořice Château are also among the documented cultural attractions of the town. An exhibition there was open year-round by prior arrangement.
