Hlavnice: Discover the Church, Castle and Landscape

Hlavnice Amid Fields and Cultural Heritage

Hlavnice lies in the Nízký Jeseník landscape region and the Opavsko field landscape type. This combination gives the village a distinctive landscape setting: a trip can be combined with visits to historic buildings as well as a cycling tour through the surrounding area. Cycle route 6159 runs through Hlavnice and connects to the Opava–Jakartovice cycle path. This means an active excursion can lead directly into the history of the village.

The Church and Castle as Defining Places

The Church of the Holy Trinity was built between 1773 and 1776 on the site of a demolished wooden church. Inside, figurative biblical scenes by Kramolín, a rare Rococo altar and a Baroque altar have been preserved. Two different styles can be observed on the altars in the same interior, while Kramolín’s scenes add a further figurative dimension. As a result, visitors’ attention during the tour is drawn not only to the architecture but also to the preserved furnishings.

Hlavnice Castle was built in 1792 in the Empire style. Three buildings in their original style have been preserved in the castle courtyard: a stable, a coach house and the former food storehouse. The castle is thus connected to a courtyard where different functions remain visible. Those wishing to compare architecture during their visit will find the castle’s Empire style alongside the preserved courtyard buildings.

The Old Mill and Regional History

Another special feature is the grounds of the old mill. A miller’s dwelling has been set up there for museum purposes. The grounds also include two two-storey storehouses dating from 1856, as well as a third storehouse relocated from Loděnice. The buildings differ in their use and origin: next to the dwelling stand the storehouses, including one building that was moved here from Loděnice. The mill therefore complements the history of the church and castle with the themes of living, storage and the relocation of a building.

Hlavnice is also connected with more recent history. Obrana Slezska was established in Hlavnice in November 1938 and was the first resistance organisation in the Opava area. On HĹŻrka stands the stone-built, slate-roofed Chapel of Saint Florian; it was reconsecrated in 1993. In addition to its location on HĹŻrka, the chapel therefore has its own historical connection through its materials, roof covering and reconsecration.

Landscape and Destinations in the Wider Area

The mountains of Ovčák and Přílet are located around Hlavnice. In the wider regional area are Mount Vinice, Mount Kozinec and the ruins of Vildštejn and Cvilin. This provides a range of destination types for planning excursions: Ovčák, Přílet, Vinice and Kozinec are mountains, while Vildštejn and Cvilin offer a different kind of visit as ruins.
