Urban history in the castle and at the fortifications

A central cultural venue is the castle in Hlučín. Following its reconstruction from 2002 to 2007, it became the home of the Hlučínska Museum, the municipal art school and the municipal library. At the museum, the permanent exhibition “Who are the people of the Hlučínsko region?” presents the history of the region as a modern interactive exhibition. The stone city fortifications are part of the town’s older history. They were built around 1530 to 1535. The wall, approximately 900 metres long, was around 4.5 metres high and about 2 metres thick; 12 semicircular bastions reinforced the structure. Also near the city fortifications, south of the market square, stands the Gothic parish church of St John the Baptist. The choir and nave are believed to date from the first half of the 14th century.

“Cesta k nebesům” offers another perspective on Hlučín. During this visit, the route leads to the church attic, continues to the bells and ends at a viewpoint overlooking Hlučín and its surroundings. This complements the historical sights with an elevated view of the town and its surroundings.

For active days, the Wake Park Hlučín cable tow is available. It is 920 metres long and operates from May to September.
