Dolní Životice: Local History and Special Discoveries

Dolní Životice combines a historical village layout that remains recognizable to this day with an unusually diverse range of evidence of local and ecclesiastical history. Those interested in traditional settlement forms, a technical monument and distinctive buildings will find several themes here that can be combined when planning a trip. A seasonal experience is also part of the character of the place: During the winter months, Panský rybník is used for ice skating by children and adults alike.

A forest-strip village with its own history

In its built form and original division of the land, Dolní Životice still preserves the features of what is known as a forest-strip village. This term refers to a historical settlement form in which the farmsteads and their associated parcels were laid out in a characteristic arrangement. The character of the village can therefore be understood not only through individual sights, but also through its traditional structure.

The remains of a water castle, also known as “Polákovo kolo,” belong to the area’s older history. An important restriction should be noted here: The remains are located on private property. They should therefore not be regarded as a freely accessible excursion destination. The history of the place goes back a long way. In 1241, the water castle and the village of Životice were destroyed by the Tatars.

Stone Testimonies and Ecclesiastical Buildings

A stone cross (Smírčí kříž) stands on a bridge over the Hvozdnice River. The cross is made of coarse-grained sandstone and is 80 cm high and 60 cm wide. It documents the administration of criminal justice in the 16th and 17th centuries. The combination of its precise dimensions, material and historical background makes this site a vivid testimony to past legal and commemorative culture.

The ecclesiastical buildings include the Chapel of St. Salvator, built in 1769. The Chapel of the Divine Savior is also a Baroque pilgrimage chapel. Another historical detail can be found in front of the entrance to the château grounds: A copy of the statue of Saint John of Nepomuk stands there on the original stepped pedestal.

Count Camillo Razumovský had the Church of the Most Holy Savior built in 1908. It is an eclectic historicist church with a dominant tower and an enclosing wall. It therefore offers a different architectural impression from the Baroque pilgrimage chapel. When choosing your own areas of focus in Dolní Životice, you can thus distinguish between local history, ecclesiastical architecture and individual sites of remembrance.

Technological History and a Seasonal Contrast

A special complement to the architectural and ecclesiastical history is the Lihovar Dolní Životice. The building is a technical monument and was one of the first electrified buildings in the region. Valuable artistic elements have been preserved there even after the façade reconstruction. The Lihovar thus combines technological development and design history without reducing its historical traces to a single theme.

In winter, Panský rybník creates a distinctly different accent. During the winter months, it is used for ice skating by children and adults alike. If you are looking for accommodation in Dolní Životice, you can therefore weigh cultural and historical discoveries against this seasonal experience without reducing the place to a single attraction.
